    Nirvana

They're considered one of the greatest bands in rock history, but I'm come to a conclusion that they were extremely overrated. A few good songs and large amount of bands that followed that tried to emulate them is pretty much all that ever came out of Nirvana. Even in the spectrum of "grunge", they were probably one of the least talented of their comtemporaries, yet remained the most popular. Lots of today's rock fans seem to worship them, which is why I even brought this topic up.

Of course, all of this is my personal opinion. I'd love to hear some other educated opinions on the subject.

I agree with this statement, but would you care to elaborate on it a little bit.

not everyone will agree with me on this im sure and most have probably not heard of alot of these bands

i think bands like Hazvex, nightwish, panic at the disco, and Celldweller are way better than nirvana and diserve more attention.

            Re: Nirvana

They are overrated. They made simplistic but well sounding music. But in the later Nirvana albums they strayed from the Grunge genre into gay. Massive amounts of gay. If you listen to Soundgarden and then old nirvana there is a relationship in their sounding except for vocals. Also when Kurt Cobain killed himself or was murdered they got mass publicity. I think that's what made them so loved. Personally I hate them because they had no talent. I don't even know if they wrote their songs sticking to a scale.

EDIT: I forgot about the bands emulating them.
None of the bands that tried to emulate them were as sucsessful as them. I find if you want to be a sucsessful musician, you have to create something new. This is the only thing I give to Nirvana. They took hard rock guitar and mixed it with pop-like vocals. They made grunge. Which exactly what is it. Dirt.

While we're on the subject, I hate the term "grunge".

Grunge has been used to describe bands like...

              Soundgarden
              Pearl Jam
              Nirvana
              Alice in Chains
              Stone Temple Pilots
              Smashing Pumpkins
              Mudhoney

NONE OF THESE BANDS SOUND ALIKE. Why use ONE term to lump them all together?

I just typed up a huge post about tons of points, but I accidentally hit the delete key and the browser went back, deleting it all.

Basically what I was saying is that people who say musicians who "have no talent" are no good are just jealous. There is plenty of great music made by artists who have been accused of having no talent throughout the years. Lots of early punk, including the ramones and the clash were said to not be able to play more than 3 chords. I had a lot more about teens and nirvana and how kurt's tragic end attracts listeners and how nirvana is a great band to learn songs from, but i dont' feel like retyping it.

you cant say nirvana has no talent, when they are one of the most influential bands in history. simply because they started the entire grunge movement. cobain didnt kill himself to be loved either, he actually did it because he loved people too much.

and if you really want to talk about 'dirt' music, the new green day album is just that. that album simply shows you that everything in this world is just about making money, as in my opinion, they completely sold out. they are prolly more overrated than anyone in music.

@cc, panic at the disco, doesnt need more attention. if a band is played on mtv, they dont need anymore exposure. and in my opinion, they completely suck monkey balls. =D

wrong, kurt cobain was one of the worst guitarist to ever be on the radio. they are influential and popular in that they paved the way for grunge.

you cant really compare them because none of those are even of the same genre. and also, panic at the disco gets plenty of attention, even though theyre not very good IMO.

pop-like vocals? wtf? singing like you got marbles in your mouth aint exactly pop. grunge is as much a look and an attitude as it is a musical genre, so even if bands do sound too much alike, they can get lumped into the same group.

                      Re: Nirvana

No one started the grunge movement. All the bands in this supposed grunge movement existed before Nirvana was even signed to a major label (with the exception of Pearl Jam, but all of the members had been in "grunge" bands before). Nirvana just happened to be the first band to hit it big. The popularity of their contemporaries just fell into place after that since they were all from the same geographic area.

Grunge is a media term, not a musical genre.

As for talent, Nirvana had talent. HOWEVER, my point about talent was about how Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains (the other parts of the "big four of grunge") were way ahead of the curve in terms of musical talent. For example, to say that Kurt Cobain was a better singer than Eddie Vedder, Chris Conell, or Layne Staley is preposterous. I could go on about guitarists, bassists, and songwriting, but I don't feel like typing it out. However, I will admit Dave Grohl was (and still is) an awesome drummer.
