Most of the time as lurker suggests I select a preset, tweak some parameters on the plugin such as internal arp, reverb, and obviously fix it's position in the mix; then if necessary I post-filter it with distortion / wet/dry etc.
I respect people who have the ability to shape their own sounds (sound designers) but being a musician it seems tedious for me when you can just alter presets to sound as amazing and still retain "your sound". I guess there some kind of purist debate here, but I'd rather not be part of it -- either approach is fine. "
DITCH THIS ATTITUDE.
Don't you even start, you know this is a dumb argument.
Being lazy about something you are passionate about is the path to mediocrity. Do the effort, learn all you can, and then give yourself the opportunity to decide when you use presets and when you shape sound.
You call yourself a musician, but you are just some chump pumping out sounds. it is time for you to get serious about your craft.
