    Three-Dimensional Abstract

I just discovered a lot of this awesome shit today. Wow. It seemed to be really popular around 2006/2007, and died off around then. For those of you who don't know, this is generally the trend I'm seeing with this art

Anyway, these pieces usually fell under the tag "3-Dimensional Art > Abstract" pool (or "Other > Abstract") on Deviant Art.

    *hooked*
I kind of am really interested in looking farther into this. So the question for you, FFRtists, is

    (1) Does anyone know if there is an actual name for this art style?
    (2) Are there any resources available for learning how to do this crazy shit?

obviously, I don't want to outright mimic it, but it's definitely a field I've always wanted to try.

edit: I realize I might be posting a lot of different art styles, but I kind of wanted to grab a wide range of the style I'm talking about. Basically it's all that 3D metal crap in there. Last one is generally stock images thrown together, but I was thinking that probably had something to do with it.

I've always seen them be called C4D renders since they were made in Cinema 4D

Hmm yeah that seems pretty close to what I'm looking for. Looks like I know what to look into for the time being.

I remember way back when trying this out for my own with good results. Basically in the simplest form you start with a polyhedron, not many sides to it, then play with Matrix Extrude to get different points brought out at random, then from there pull back the selection a few sections down and extrude stuff again, with random variation/rotation each time. Pieces ike that first one, with the "craters" looking things, is done just by extruding out pieces, extrude inner, and then extruding in the middle, then over it all apply a hypernurbs smoother or whatever that thing's called, haven't opened C4D in awhile : c

Some of the more organic ones are prolly done with spline doodles using different extruding techniques. Very cool stuff though, love the style of it. A lot of brushes used in stepmania backgrounds are derived from images made with this, so it's not necessarily nextgen, but it will certainly be awesome if people can whip up their own renditions
