Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
Not to mention you're comparing direct radio signals (speed of light and whatnot) to digital wire transmission signals, its an unfair comparison based on that alone. Much better technology? Lol no.Comment

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
not to mention the average astronaut is worse at league of legends than the average league of legends player
think about thatComment

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
Given the astronauts upbringing, I actually doubt that statement is true.
Fiber is literally speed of light and stuff like ethernet uses electric signals that is just 'a bit' slower. Anyway, 1s delay is actually a hell lot, if I don't get a really bad route my latency with US servers is between 100~200ms. Even against Asia servers is around 400ms.Comment

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
if all astronauts play league of legends and not all league of legends players are good, then which of the following is true:
a) not all astronauts are good at league of legends
b) not all league of legends players are astronauts
c) not astronauts of league are good at all legendsLast edited by Dynam0; 08-10-2014, 12:13 PM.Comment

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
but you're comparing streaming to much simpler forms of communication (probably gaming but at worst you could just be talking about pinging a server which requires practically no data) which is just as unfair an assumption to makeFiber is literally speed of light and stuff like ethernet uses electric signals that is just 'a bit' slower. a second or two is completely fine if we're just talking about casual interaction with a streamer, while 30 seconds is obviously harmful to any form of interaction whatsoever (although TPP became more interesting and strategic because of it)Last edited by lurker; 08-10-2014, 12:15 PM.some feathery f**k

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
Latency is pretty much constant and based on actual distance of your connection route. Streaming is only heavy on bandwidth but that's irrelevant to effective latency.
The only other thing that would make a difference is if twitch does some significant processing (like applying the copyright thing on livestreams) before setting up the stream for viewers, but there's nothing that really justifies it.
There are many reasons a minimal 1~2s delay would be desirable for the streaming service, I'm just pointing out that it's not a question of connection infra-structure to build the streaming pipeline.Comment

Re: Twitch blocking copyrighted audio
Yeah, that's how it should be, and twitch used to do it that way. I think at some point they changed to a different streaming format, which puts a chunk of frames into one block and sends out those blocks instead of sending the stream out continuously. Of course the size of the chunk determines the absolute minimum latency, because twitch's servers have to wait for the whole thing to be done before they can send it over.Latency is pretty much constant and based on actual distance of your connection route. Considering that it was literally only a couple of days between having streams with great interaction and having streams with 30+ second delay, it's definitely the change of format, and not some kind of data/speed issues they're having.Best AAA: Policy In The Sky [Oni] (81)
