Has anybody found a way to boot from external?

Has anybody figured out a way to purely boot from just the external drive? My internal HDD is fried and I have a 1 TB external but I can't get windows 7 to install to it.
    Anyone know about this?

I know you can use Ubuntu but I don't think windows will work that way. I could be wrong.

I recommend you try Plop boot manager. It is basically a stage 2 bootloader that allows you to do things like boot to USB when the BIOS does not support it. Seems like it should be able to handle external drives as well.

Usually it is dependent on your motherboards bios or not if it supports usb booting. Also the harddrive often has to be set to be an active partition so that the bios recognizes it as a usb bootable device.

I've already covered my tracks with the BIOS just can't install windows 7 to my external. Probably going to have to buy a new internal ;(

Also, your external IS an internal. If you want just take it apart and install into your computer. May not work if it is a desktop sized external drive and a laptop. Might be a pain to take the external apart. HDD's are pretty cheap right now, http://www.newegg.com/Internal-Hard-...14?Order=PRICE
