Building a PC finally. Advice?

As it stands, I'm not a PC gamer at all. This may change once I build this depending on some things. The only game I really play a lot is Dota 2 which despite having very low requirements, runs at 30fps on the lowest possible settings and even then has random skips, as I think my laptop's shitty graphics card may being going kaput. Here is the build I'm sitting at right now that mostly my friend that has more experience building computers set up for me:



Anything I'm missing? I've heard Radeon 6850 is better than 7770, but I couldn't find a cheap one with a good brand. Is it a noticable difference? Would any of you recommend going cheaper on the processor? I was advised to not mess too much with cheaper processors, but above all I'm looking for an affordable PC that's "future-proof".

Still waiting for my financial aid to roll in for this sucker.

I'm using an AMD Phenom II 4X 955 Black Edition and it runs extremely well for the price of $89 (iirc). I'm not entirely sure if it's worth getting over the i5, but I've been using it since november and it still works like new. Ofc, if were to get it over the i5 you'd have to pick out a different motherboard, but that's totally up to you

i have disk drive/hard drive stuff just lying around. I was thinking that I need to check that but I don't actually know how. The only thing that actually shows a watt usage is the processor, but I know that's not all there is to it.

Regardless of AMD/Intel, stick with known brands for motherboards; Asus, ASRock, Gigabyte.

Can probably get a better case with the savings from the processor. Good brands are Cooler Master, Corsair, Lian-Li, NZXT.

You'll need a hard drive unless you want to pry open your laptop for the one in there. Your choices are basically either Western Digital or Seagate for mass storage, mechanical hard drives. A mechanical will be all you need, or you can get a solid state drive for extra read/write speed at the cost of space. For mechanicals stick with a 7200 rpm speed for a main drive and 5400s for storage. For solid states, Corsair, Crucial, Mushkin, and OCZ are popular brands, while Intel's are still overpriced.

600 W is enough for a power supply if you're not going to SLI/Crossfire(2 graphics cards)(can't crossfire that 7770 anyway..).

Using PCPartPicker can help avoid incompatibilities and find good deals. Here's your build on there with a few tweaks.

Oh, something I forgot to bring up. I have a Roccat Kave headset with surround sound hookups which has been wasted on my laptop all this time. Will my motherboard have those kind of hookups are do I need my own sound card for that?

follow up. The thing is built, but I can't seem to get the bios to show up on my monitor. All the LEDs are on and fans are spinning, but just got a black screen on the monitor atm. Any steps I could have missed that would cause this?

-Did you plug the additional 6pin power plug needed for the Radeon 7770?
-Are the RAM modules seated properly?
-Does the mobo have a built in speaker/etc. that indicates that the system is working properly and it's just a display problem?

it is not beeping

Yes, yes, I don't know for sure but I didn't see one.

I think most modern motherboards include in an optional beeper/speaker in the box. See if you can hook that up to the board?

it's possible you have a silent system, but usually no beeps means No Power, Loose Card, or Short
