Is it a bad thing if I use my ring finger in spread?

Okay, so on my left hand I use my middle finger and ring finger while on my right hand i use the normal index and middle finger to play by habit

I was wondering if it's a bad thing to use my middle and ring fingers on my left hand instead of the normal index and middle finger, because I know that it is difficult to move your ring finger independently. This concerned me because with the 7 and 8 songs I have gotten to the point where quick reflexes are needed.

So tl;dr should i just keep playing like this or should I start working on using my index and middle fingers instead, or does it even matter?

It's all about what feels right when playing, everyone has their own preferences while playing, so every setup is a right answer. I play regular spread [1 2 - =] but I'll fool around and use your left hand setup for both hands, it is a very good way to practice 6keys as well. In all, it doesn't really matter.

It's not bad to use middle ring (I use it myself actually) but the using of index middle and ring middle makes me surprised. I don't think I've seen that before.

I'd probably recommend you switch to index and middle. While it's not necessarily wrong that you play that way, in addition to the need for quicker reflexes the muscles between your middle and ring fingers is a lot less responsive to movement (try moving your ring and pinky fingers back and forth as quickly as you can for an additional example of this).

Flexibility is also an issue - I play one handed with just my right hand. But even though I've never played a game with my left hand, I can still naturally move my left index and middle fingers very quickly, in particular a trill motion. I cannot do the same with my ring/middle fingers together - the muscles in my hand don't allow for that kind of quick repetitive motion effectively. Just my two cents - hope this helps.

definately make the switch to middle and index. You could get good the way you are playing but you would be better if you played regular spread.

if you want to play optimally then yes switch to standard but honestly your finger choice doesn't matter much until you get into the far upper tiers

people can play 12s with ring and pinkie fingers

ffr is 95% mental, the physical component only coming in at the most difficult files

Do what feels more natural. I do the exact opposite of you (Left hand middle and index, Right hand middle and ring). I've found I do better that way than the "standard" spread setup.

There's no need to switch to regular spread, just do whatever feels the most comfortable. Although, you can always try with other styles, if you notice your scores are better with regular spread, then go ahead and switch to that, if not, then there's no need to switch. The ring finger has more weight than the index finger, so it hits the key with more force, which creates good emphasis if you are trying to maintain accuracy . I find that I can actually trill with more accuracy with my two ring ringers as opposed to my two index fingers. However, the use of the ring and middle finger has the disadvantage when working with things like one-handed trills since there isn't a lot of flexibility between the two fingers. You might even find that some songs work better with different finger selections, so just see what works for you. :3

I use my middle and ring finger on both hands. It works for me decently well.

I play with my ring finger all the time with zero problems. It's all about your personal preference.

I play like Bynary Fission with only my right hand.
Tried one time index and failed badly.

Haven't read all the responses, but I would switch immediately. Ignore the "do what feels right" bs. It's physics. Your pointer is stronger than your ring finger.

I chose to do this, not because I played split in my past years (which incorporate the middle and ring fingers for the up and right keys). The ring finger is easier to use less force when hitting your keys, but at the same time, it is not a weak finger. Also, your decision also relates to your key configuration; As my up and right arrows are 8 and 6 on the numpad, my ring finger (6) feels natural in the diagonal position it is relative to my middle finger (8).

It is for that exact reason that I use Index Middle on my right hand. It is a comfort thing for me to have both middle fingers bent, using left down arrows and 8 6 numpad.

As for switching, it might be best to find a setup that replicates your current play style, an example being for a player like Subin to try normal spread as 4 6 on the numpad, that way his middle and ring can be in the same spot, and he can still incorporate his index.


Don't you have a background with piano though, Subin? That background would help with dexterity across all fingers instead of naturally favouring the primary fingers used daily.
