As for your question.. I think you can, you just have to set up the key configurations on your own, iirc wii controllers, arcade sticks, rock band drums, all sorts can be used to play ffr.

you might need to use a macro program but it should work

I've used the drums... except mine are broken now :'(
I managed to FC Tsugaru with them, hahaha.

and yeah there are lots of ways to play FFR with a control I'm sure you've already been given some hints by some other, more awesomer-than-me people, all I can say is, if you own a ps3, don't try to play using the control it is very very hard D:!
