Re: How to get better at FFR

To get better at FFR you need to practice, practice practice...
remember all of the pros you see now have once been in your
shoes and have been a beginner and a newbie before. But because
of practice they have gotten better like i have over the years.
What i would mainly focus on is perfects and combos. More perfects and
combos leads to better avg. ranking on FFR, and more AAA's/Tier points.
Also i would decide on which style to choose out of the 3 common ones.
    1 handed, Index And Spread.
spread is a way to be good at those hard jump songs and songs that involves
    alot of thrills.
Index is good at straight up combo like up down left right and so on. songs like monstrous turtles, rose, CIA rave, blaze are examples. and also index
are good in some repeating arrows/jumps.
1hand is what people usually start off with. its the least affective way but
if your doing master songs with 1 hand then you'll basically be the best in FFR
because 1 hand mastery is so hard to master that it gives you boosts if your
    good.

Now once you did everything start by getting some skill tokens, and
token songs. Then practice on them til you get a SDG on them single digit good or you AAA. do this on each song starting at beginner and working your
way up. DONT STOP AT BEGINNER TIL YOU AAA each beginner song... its very
affective and will get you to be a guru in no time. i done this and i am a master in a couple of weeks. but i can't AAA things higher than Very difficult because of i didn't follow this path. i said nah i'll just FC them. now people lower than me gets better perfects.
i know this wasn't a real guide but hey its just a sumirized of all things people saying.

I think there should be a subsection under key configuration that states what double setup is. Many people tend to use double setup unknowingly (s0ulst0n3 for example. used 6 keys to make trills easier in spread/). Most people assume that double setup is when one uses 8 keys to mash vROFL FCs (this is hard even with double setup, or so I hear), CP FCs, and DP FCs. Even if the keys aren't used to "cheat", I think it's important that rising newbies don't unknowingly use double setup and become accustomed to it. All forms of keymapping that utilizes more than 4 keys is cheating, regardless of it's intentions/shape.

Lol, there's one thing that's bugging me about this. What about for players like me, who can FC FMOs? I would go practice on SM to work on speed and accuracy. But how are newbs going to know about SM right away, only a few days/weeks after joining?

Good point. The only sticky in the Newbie forum mentioning anything about Stepmania in the first place is the one stating how to add songs. How can we expect newbies to know what Stepmania is in the first place when they might not have ever been exposed to any music rhythm games?

To be honest, I'm still don't really know which song packs are the official ones and which packs would be best for me in terms of practicing speed/PA (seeing how SM is the best way to improve in those). I REALLY need to know that right now. D:

EDIT: Oh yeah, did you know that I only found out about SM... maybe... TWO YEARS after I joined FFR? I only started using it in February. :O

In a perfect world kids see the greatness of stepmania before they join this. However thats usually not the case.

Try the Hard Songs Megapacks 1-4. Those are the only ones I know for sure, as I'm pretty much a newbie myself when it comes to SM. I know nothing about SM, ha ha.

Exactly. I enjoy FFR, but I always wonder where I would be now (in terms of playing level) if I knew about SM and not FFR. :P

If I knew about SM before FFR (or at the same time), I'd be FC'ing FGOs by now. Instead, I've been here for months and still haven't FC'd a single one.

I've only FC'd 3 FMOs: Hajnal, Choprite and Novo Mundo.

I have found that the one-hand style is the one I'm most comfortable with. I can't always keep up but I am used to this style so it helps. Also, spamming the buttons definitely doesn't help. You usually end up missing more than you would if you were actually trying, which makes you fail that much faster. Trying harder difficulties has made me notice a significant improvement in my skill. I can now recognize individual arrows much easier and have no problem with complex patterns to a certain extent. Thanks for the tips!

Congrats on the improvement in skill! As you get better, I keep losing my speed/PA skills.

Truly, and I mean, truly a very good and through discription. I use two hands on arrows and I can FC up to challeneging songs and AAA up to difficult(for now) but I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to combine one or two hands into one kind of style... anyone want to help me out?
