    FFR choice of music

I understand alot of users from this community enjoy dance music, or maybe is it just easier to make stepfiles for dance songs, but...

Why arent anyone making ANY metal songs? There's about...2 hard rock songs, then the rest of the rock section is soft rock.

If anyone could step songs from any of the following bands for FFR, i'd be more than grateful and am quite sure thousands of others would be too:

    Demons & Wizards
    Rhapsody
    Blind Guardian
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Symphony X
    Stratovarius
    SuidAkra

What he said. Rock bands are much harder to get permission from for free than electronica artists in general, AND the songs tend to be harder to step well.

We're trying to balance this out by encouraging file artists to step Rock songs, but it's not that easy.

Did you even begin to consider how difficult some/most/all of these would be to get permission for?

Honestly though, the Funk and Hip-Hop genres need even more help then Rock.

P.S. The rock/metal band we really need is Freedom Call.

I laughed so hard when I saw Yingew Malmsteen!!!!

That would be a song consisting of 0 framers because he plays so damn fast.

I think a main reason that people don't do that is because

                a) permission is harder to get (as said before)
                b) most people don't like to have their ears raped while they play FFR--- just look at the cornandbeans thread about how he made some ear rape music... if you like that and you want that in FFR, then go step it... nobody else wants to have to listen to it.

I've heard several of those bands before, and everyone's point still stands. You cannot use their songs until they give express permission for you to use their songs. Contact them, convince them to give permission, and people will be happy to step songs by them.

If I actually knew about the whole process of getting the right to step these bands' songs, i'd do it.

If anyone would care to explain?

                        You ask them.

Most big name bands will not give out any of their music for free. We just received permission from plenty of punk-ish bands, but honestly the stepfiles are so damn hard to make well it's not fun to do.

                          Re: FFR choice of music

to give you an OFFICIAL answer...

first, you need to find some way of contacting the band. if they're unsigned, then you just need permission from them. unfortunately, most name bands are signed. most of those are signed by major labels, vs indie labels. unsigned artists really have no reason NOT to give permission... free publicity is god to them. indie labels are in between... they're willing to consider it, because their resources aren't amazing, but at the same time, they're wary. we've gotten some indie bands, but not that many. now... the real big name bands are on major labels. your UMGs and SonyBMGs of the world. generally, they won't consider it at all. they have the money to promote and advertise their artists... they want money in return for using their artist's songs. on top of that, most of those artists have sold the publishing rights to their lyrics to a publishing company. aka, you have to get permission from TWO sources that aren't the band... the record label and the publishing company.

that's just the permission side. which i spend a lot of my time dealing with... so should you actually ever decide to try this (which i doubt you will), and you actually get a response... i'd advise you to notify me and ask for me to take over the conversation. i've done it before, i know what i'm doing, and i'm part of the site's management which conveys an authority of "i know what the **** i'm talking about"... which i do.

THEN you have the stepfile making side. electronic music is MUCH easier to step. it is usually a constant bpm, or if it isn't, it's usually a series of fairly straightforward numbers. no 174.36 bpms. live recorded music is, for hopefully obvious reasons, not at a static bpm. that makes syncing the file MUCH MUCH harder, and take a lot longer. which deters most people from even trying. there are exceptions of course... some bands can get CLOSE to a constant bpm... but even still, exceptions.

hope that answers your questions to some extent.
                          RIP

Well, I didnt expect to get such a good response... Thanks alot!

I'll look into it and..from what you're telling me, I can forget about yngwie malmsteen Guy's a guitar god and a greedy *censored*.

I've seen rhapsody songs being stepped so i'm guessing it could be the first band I should try with, althought having at least one or two songs from demons & wizards would really be great. They have excellent studio quality songs without a bunch of other instruments added in. 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum is what you get for most songs.

                              Re: FFR choice of music

Rhapsody and Dragonforce are bands that, at least in studio, use electronic drums. Thus their bpms are closer to constant, making them easier to step. (Granted, the guitar solos are still challenging)

Having stepped a few songs myself, I can tell you this:
The easiest and most enjoyable songs to make steps for have
                              1. Constant bpm
                              2. Electronic instrumentation
                              3. Little or no emphasis on lyrics
                              4. Varied rhythms
                              5. A very strong, well-defined melody.

Those criteria entirely rule out rock and hiphop, and much of funk violates #1 or #5. You can see why most steppers choose to step dance/electronic music, then.
