Why is the UN getting involved in a civil war?

I believe they got involved because someone went to the Security Council about Libya. So they held a meeting and warned Gadhafi to not attack. He told many UN officials "Libya is not yours. Libya is ours." But, told Obama "How would you feel if you were in this position." Was nice to the USA leader, but snarky with others. The UN warned him that if an attack was to happen we would intervene. And so it happened.

Unless Libya has any sort of allies I don't see this becoming any sort of world war. They're already stupidly outnumbered.

Well in the article Ichlie posted and others online, you'll see that Gadhafi has really powerful military arsenal. He could easily take over Benghazi. That's what we're trying to prevent. Taking out the big rebel leaders is what this is all about. If Gadhafi does that he will have backing. It's crucial we prevent that. As he said, he vows a "long war."

There is no chance whatsoever of some kind of "world war" happening. If direct military intervention happens, the West will just pummel Libya into submission in a week and move on from there.

We do still have the issue of Somalia. I mean, at least Libya has a somewhat civilized government, albeit corrupt. Somalia is an anarchist state whose people trade blood for money, and all that happens when they pull a stunt or kill some foreign nationals is they get a week or two of media attention at best before they're brushed under the rug.

Actually that's probably what will happen with Libya as well unless Gaddafi does something that the UN might truly give a damn about, but it's kind of hard for him to do anything of that calibre with the forces of multiple nations breathing down his neck.
