What's a poor guy to do?

Hypothetical situation:

People don't like you. They flame you constantly, mock you in every concievable way, and go as far as to try and get their friends to turn on you. What these people are doing is against the law, whether it be rules laid down for a particular club, or perhaps real legal law. The enforces of the law turn their head the other way, until you finally start to react just how the original conspirators wanted you to. You are punished, they get off scott-free.

What do you do in such a situation? How do you make it right?

Assuming the medium of interaction is the internet, you suck it up and move on with the realization that the world isn't fair. You're not going to start anything remotely similar to a civil rights movement on the Internet because it's the Internet, and just because you think it should be treated as seriously as real life doesn't mean it has to be or even that others should feel the same way.

a) silently scoff and become uber-condescending towards assholes who do such things b) rise above it as pettiness c) go on a killing spree, yourself included or not included d) turn into a wallowing ball of hurt and avoid people the rest of your life. I suggest a or b. b is probably best. Unless, of course, the situation is extreme, such that your life has become a never-ending nightmare. Like if you were a Jew in the holocaust. Killing spree is definitely the way to go then.

Kilgayaman: I disagree in the possibility of starting something like a civil rights movement on the internet. China has adopted measures against freedom of speech on the internet against that exact possibility. (Or are you referring to having a civil rights movement pertaining specifically TO the internet though? Kinda like if it were it's own country? That's an interesting idea.) I know there's been discussion about the medium of the internet and the way people act differently on it, but its still ridiculous to imply that the medium of any communication automatically makes anything that happens through that medium moot or above human decency. Furthermore, you've not remotely described your position beyond 'come on!'.

If there's one thing I've learned about hypothetical situations, it's that they're never hypothetical. I certainly hope you aren't talking about your situation on FFR. You pretty much brought that on yourself.

If this hypothetical situation was reality, I wouldn't be at the "reacting like they want you to" stage. I'd ignore them. On the off-chance that I pick up enemies, they only dislike me for their own reasons, not my actions. When they finally realize I am not interested in their attacks, they completely lose spirit and leave me alone.

If this hypothetical situation is parallel to the one at FFR, stop baiting. You can't justify what happened by saying "I'm being myself" if yourself is an aggressive asshole. Topics like "I'm sorry. " only remind people of the negativity. Just be nice (for lack of a better way of saying it), let it pass, and I'm sure people will forget about it.

The thing is... there are too many people in the world for society to baby and care for and protect individuals who are in this hypothetical situation. If people are turning against you and you feel like everyone is out to get you, go see a psychologist or something because that is a signal of depression. If this is your situation with ffr (I don't know really, I don't patrol the forums as much, mainly the maplestory forum) then all you can do really is suck it up and live with it. The internet is not taken seriously by everyone, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you will be able to accept it. People ganging up on you is a natural part of life; try to find someone who hasn't been in this type of situation. Everyone handles it differently and it is how you handle these types of things that create who you are as a person and what values you have. You making these threads is signalling to me that you are looking for attention, and nobody likes attention whores. I say just suck it up because life goes on. Realize that you are not the only person in the world going through this; I could go on forever about my problems but I keep it to myself so I don't draw more attention to myself.

Being banned from the entirety of this site for being tired of having people bash my ideas just because they came from me and no other reason in other areas of the forum is pretty retarded. If I didn't talk to some of the mods on AIM, I'd have been gone from FFR for more than a week, because I was baiting the people who went out of their way to bait me, but apparently, I'm better at it than they are.

You just saw what happened in the garbage bin. Last I recall, "the internets is serious business" is the mantra there. I wasn't serious with any of the posts I made in there, and never will be.

As for letting something pass, I tried. Taking a leave of absense from the internet over the summer (it's not like that's a first for me, either, because I tend to be busy over summer and don't really have a desire to chat with internet folk) is just something I've done pretty consistently. I came back, and guess what? Still got flamed for the same things I always have been, regardless of my own level of civility.

I'm not the kind to just give up and leave because a lot of people are jerks. I've made quite a few good friends through this site, and even when the odds are against me, I still make more. I rather like the place. So, with that in mind, what should I do?

Yes, the second thing is what I meant. Internet in the real world is something worth fighing for, but a Rosa Parks-like action completely within the confines of a community on the internet isn't likely to accomplish anything.

I know there's been discussion about the medium of the internet and the way people act differently on it, but its still ridiculous to imply that the medium of any communication automatically makes anything that happens through that medium moot or above human decency.

I'm not saying that such a result is a guarantee, I'm saying that if it happens one should say "oh well" and move on, because it's completely illogical to think that your one, completely powerless voice is going to accomplish a change-of-mind in someone who is under no legal or moral obligation to owe you anything, especially when you have so many voices against you.
