Re: Does death scare anybody else?

The thought of death depresses me since I am Athiest. I do not believe in Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, re-incarnation, or any other form of after-life.
Some nights I can't fall asleep due to the fact that I know someday that I won't
be around and there will be nothing. It's not an 'internal rest' because there is nothing.
And, when my mother dies there is no way I am going to be able to go through anymore school. Death is terrible. And the thought of death depresses, and scares me. I have actually cried before because I know that one day I am going to be a ****ing skeleton in the ground and no one will ever care that I was alive.

I don't really know how you can be afraid of death though, unless your scared of hell or something, but if your atheist, then you believe there is nothing. And that's not such a bad thought is it.

"I am going to be a ****ing skeleton in the ground and no one will ever care that I was alive."

Ok, so even if that is true, (and I highly doubt it will be unless you become a reclusive hermit) then you won't care because you wont be able to care, so what does it matter?
That's why I'm going to donate my body to science and medicine, because I don't care what happens to my body after I'm dead, because...I'll be dead...

but if your atheist, then you believe there is nothing.
Atheism only deals with deities, what happens after you die is a whole other cup of tea. An atheist could believe in reincarnation, wondering around aimlessly etc. and still be classified as an atheist as long as they have the assertion in the disbelieve of higher deities.

          Yeah sorry,

"Some nights I can't fall asleep due to the fact that I know someday that I won't
be around and there will be nothing. It's not an 'internal rest' because there is nothing."

I was addressing his beliefs and other atheists who share them.

Re: Does death scare anybody else?

Well i am not to good at talking about things like this but ill give it a try. When i was younger in my early teens i used to think about death not that i wanted to kill my self i just started to think about my mortally and it started to scare me to the point where i was afraid to do any thing to make me feel alive then one day i just stopped worrying about it and learned the all living things will one day die and embrace my mortality and learned to enjoy what little time on earth we have.
I guess im trying to say death is just the last step of life so who cares what may happen when you die just make sure you live a life that makes you happy and have no regrets when your time is up.

We have only one run at this life so make it count.

I'm not scared of death at all. I think that people don't necessarily fear death itself, but what will occur after death, or what will cause death. For instance I don't fear death, but I do fear that it will be caused by something that would otherwise cause fear and pain (falling off of a high structure or getting tortured). Don't worry about what you won't be able to accomplish in your life, instead, worry about what you should do next! ^_^

Even all of the great people in History get no respect. On Martin Luther King's birthday, everyone is just happy to get off of work/school. When do you say to yourself, ''Wow, I am glad that ______ was alive.'' If you are being honest with yourself, you probably don't say it. Even I am not grateful for people that have died in the past, such as soldiers and stuff. They were strangers, you never knew them, you don't care.

While it is true that these people were strangers to us, it is still good to try and reflect upon those who died for this country. Admittedly yes, I am happy to get off school, but I still think about why we get these holidays as I'm sure many others do.

Not really, I'm afraid of dying in a horrific way. I'd prefer to be blown up or die or natural causes, anything painless will work.

When I die, I want to go out with a bang, take others out with me.
Either that or be very, very drugged up. I have never done drugs or have drinken alcohal, and I never will, but when I am about to die, I will do anything I can to take myself away from reality so I don't know I am dying.

That seems like a good way to go, peaceful and asleep.

Re: Does death scare anybody else?

yeah, i've been thinking about death a lot recently.
it is so scary to think about, our minds just can't comprehend the thought.
i'm afraid of it & i'm not, if you get me.
i don't want to become.. nothing, but i'm not afraid of what may lie on the other side, if there is one.
i'm trying to live life to the fullest because you never know if you'll be there the next day, so make the most out of it.

&& i agree, i want to die in a way that people will remember me.
i just don't want to die in a horrible, long, painful death.. like burning or drowning or torture..
dying like that probably frightens me most.

You make a terrific point. We never really know what our existence after death will be like, so we really should live with no regrets. It really makes you wonder.....

I need a clarification before I can adequately respond to this thread. What is your definition of death? This may sound strange, but we (mankind) really don't have a firm definition for what dying is. Is it your heart stopping? You brain ceasing to function? That which defines your personality unraveling? What everyone needs to release is that human beings are not one autonomous entity. We are a series of chemical and biological reactions occurring in concert. You can remove some of these processes and still have "life" so it is difficult to draw a line where life ends and death begins.

there is nothing to fear from death. You don't know when it is comming so u can't stop it. All anyone can do is to live in the moment. Live in the now!!!
