    American History

OK, so here's what my teacher told us: write a 7 page thesis paper on any topic from the Revolutionary War up to 2001. I don't really want to cover any of the wars since those topics seem common(and thus less interesting to grade).

I was thinking along the lines of immigration in America(maybe Asian immigration in specific since general immigration might be tricky in 7 pages), the emergence of popular culture(movies, art, literature) or settling the west.

Any ideas? Just throw some stuff out.

Because I'm me, I say take a look at foreign and economic policy changes and the events that affected them.

      Lol...
Do The Hole in the Wall gang.
The mob family that owned a house bulding company. They would make the walls out of stucko, so if you had a hit on you, they could just take a sledgehammer, break down your wall, and then whack you.

Reconstruction and other reasons why the North sucks.

Or just the first part of that.

            Reconstruction sounds good.
The space race- interesting. I would have never thought of that.
As for foreign and economic policy changes, I think that's too deep for me, but maybe I could focus on Eisenhower?
The other idea I have- reasons for restrictions on immigration from 1780 to the present.

Looks like Winter Vacation is going to be rough. Yet fun and educational.

If you want to write about something actually interesting, for example, not reconstruction, you should try writing about the state of poverty and the life of the lower class in the late 1800s cities. You should write about the political machines & bosses, Tamanny Hall, about the scams to get voters from all races to vote in unison by putting people of the same race in each respective neighborhood to promote the candidate, etc. I just read about it myself, and it's really interesting.
Every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lives here on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

                          Re: American History

Thanks to PBS(specifically, an episode of American Experience), I have decided to do my essay, which I should have started on Monday, on (don't laugh) Jesse James and his relation to the pre/post Civil War era. It should be interesting stuff. No one seems to know the context of James's story, only that he went around robbing and killing like Robin Hood meets Billy the Kid(which is not even true).

If I survive to finish the essay, I might share some of my findings. It's really interesting if you're geeky about history.

                            Re: American History

I have to do a similar project for US History. I'm only up to Industrial Revolution, but I have to choose any topic and do a project on it. I decided on the Federalist and Democratic-Republican topic. My thesis statement was "How would America be affected if there were only one party, the Federalists?" The party preferred a strong central gov't, so I wondered how it would affect society if the Rep. party and Thomas Jefferson didn't get rid of the Feds. For 8th grade, it might be something useful to look on.
