The "virgin" mary? [warning: discretion advised]

let me just say something first: I am not particularly religious.

anyway my mom is the typical person who thinks that they are pacifists, practice every religion (though this contradicts each specific religion in itself...) and believes in the afterlife and stuff like that.

we were talking about the virgin mary and the miracle that produced Jesus Christ. She told me how her father attended some Jesuit school and he and her both believe that mary did in fact have intercourse with a man to become pregnant, and that the miracle is that her hymen was still intact. she said that the theory where god planted his seed in mary was bull.

I told her that by definition, her theory would render Mary a nonvirgin, because being virgin means not partaking in any intercourse whatsoever.

Her circular logic was that doctor's tell whether a woman is a virgin or not by the state of her hymen, because during intercourse the hymen usually breaks, meaning you aren't a virgin anymore. she drew the conclusion that if you have an intact hymen you're a virgin, and if you have a broken one you're a nonvirgin.

someone please tell me she's an idiot.

If I remember health class... I think sperm can travel through the thin layer of skin, actually. In fact I think one of the speakers we had had that happen to her.

So it's possible that no penetration actually took place, and if you define intercourse as involving penetration, then therefore no intercourse took place and it was a "virgin" birth.

It's very possible for a woman to get pregnant and still have a hymen, but I very much agree with you that that destroys the virgin aspect of Mary. The term "virgin" connotes unused, pure, untouched, etc. I'm not too sure doctors back then (when the bible was written) went snooping around Mary's crotch to see if she had a hymen or not.

Having a hymen intact isn't very much of a miracle, is it? And giving Jesus a human father isn't too sweet, either. I can tell you that whatever Jesuit school your grandfather attended wouldn't have taught them what they believe, either.

Oh, and how would someone have an intact hymen after birth? If something so, relatively, small breaks it going in, wouldn't a baby break it going out?

So, yeah, I call BS on your mom.

OH MY GOD, i almost died from choking on my drink when i read that last post. fucking hillarius. mostly because at first read i though you were addressing it to "Jesus" supposed son of God.

the thing is, i feel very very very sorry for Jesus's dad... poor bastard, i am no behemouth among men but if its too small to break a chick hymen. no wonder he claimed that his son was concieved of the holy spirit. think about how badly he would be mocked....

The hymen can break doing everyday activities also.

Or it was a miracle . . . not. I personally think Christians believe in a mischevious timetraveller who is screwin with people for fun. I mean, go back, use current methods to make a "test tube baby" and replant it. Not a miracle, not godly, not that hard. Just about every miracle they believe in is possible with science and some nice time travel.

its a debate forum, who's to say what you're allowed to debate and what you're not?

its not as if I'm blatantly using obscene words, and if you're not mature enough to read this thread as a serious post then you may as not well be here.
