The "Ask Nick Skyline Anything" Thread

I've been playing Stepmania and FFR on and off since Fall 2008.

I've been into Pokemon for most of my life.

I can answer as many questions as you send me.

How did you get into music making and FL Studio specifically?

        Play any instruments?

What is your favourite non-DDR-derivative rhythm game and why?

            1. Early Stepmania GFX mixed with my experience with Photoshop in general.

            2. Maybe, if I can get a good enough portfolio to get in. I plan on graduating from the 2-year program and working solo from home, if that's even possible. I also, during said career, want to design a logo for a major, world-renowned company.

I actually don't remember...maybe I watched the trailer for Hairspray and it sort of inspired me to pick up a DAW for myself. So the reason I'm making music is probably the main cast, and the songwriter of the Hairspray musical starring Vincent Vega and Zac "High School Musical" Efron.

After listening to that soundtrack, I tried to step the soundtrack and failed miserably after about 10 songs and scrapped them all (No, you can't play them). I might re-step "Ladies Choice"...

Not really. Maybe a little bit of trumpet and/or keyboard (I still play keyboard, just in FL Studio and on my computer keyboard).

You're playing poker with a tiger, an orang-utan, and a beaver. You're holding Ks 10d and the flop is Ac Ad As. The orang-utan bets 2x the minimum while making strange noises to itself. The beaver chews on its cards and raises to 4x. The tiger plays after you, but it's staring intently at you. Do you fold, call, raise, or run screaming?

              What's your first unintentional omniflag/rainbowflag?

After buying an antique dictionary from the late 19th century, you find a tri-folded paper with a chemical equation and a recipe for some kind of vegetable filled pastry. The names of five of your childhood friends are hand-written on the back. And on arriving at home you notice the electrical service to your subdivision has been interrupted. What do you do first? A. Call the power company. B. Drive to the bookstore and place the book back on the shelf and buy a generator. C. Find the addresses of your childhood friends and ask them about the note and for diesel fuel. D. Combine the chemical with the recipe, drive to your childhood friend's homes and leave the pastries on their doorsteps. E. Copy the note exactly, but with new names, burn the original, travel to a bookstore in another town and leave the note inside another book.

Could you explain how this place is, as you called it, "one of the million lands of milk and arrow-shaped cookies"?

Theorem: If you have a large enough number of monkeys, and a large enough number of computer keyboards, one of them will sight-read AAA death piano on stealth. And the ffr community will forever worship it. Proof Example

              ask me anything here

              mashed FCs: 329

              r1: 5
              r2: 4
              r3: 6
              r4: 8
              r5: 3
              r6: 5
              r7: 15
              final position: 4th

I stare back at the tiger intently for a minute or two.

P.S. You forgot chip count, so I'll make up some #s.

                Orang-utan: $14m - Bet $1m
                Beaver: $8m - Raise to $2m
                Me: $37.5m - Call $2m
                Tiger: $23m - Call $2m
                Orang-utan calls.

                Turn: Qc

                Orang-utan: $13m - Check
                Beaver: Check
                Me: Check
                Tiger: Check

                River: Kh

                Orang-utan: $13m - Bet $4m
                Beaver: $8 - Raise ALL-IN ($8m)
                Me: $35.5m - ALL-IN
                Tiger: $21m - Call, ALL-IN
                Orang-utan: ALL-IN

THROW-DOWN (I let the Tiger go first):

                Tiger: 8c 7c (Three Aces)
Orang-utan: 2d 2h (Full House, Aces full of Deuces)
Beaver: Chewed-up Qh Qs - (Full House, Aces full of Queens)
My Hand: Ks 10d (Full House, Aces full of Kings)

I get up, leave my cards, and exit the table.

                F. Wait until the power comes back on, then bake the pastry using the recipe provided and solve the chemical equation but hide the answer away in a safe place. Then call over three of your childhood friends and have them play rock-paper-scissors with each other. The overall winner gets the pastry you made, and the overall loser has to solve the chemical equation with no resources and e-mail you the answer by tomorrow morning. The other guy gets the antique dictionary as a free souvenir.

It's a nonsensical euphemism for this site as a whole.

I was PM'd these, so I might as well answer them here.

I think the real questions are:
*What's the method I use to sync a file?
*How do I know what to put at the beginning of Measure 9/17/etc?

When I feel the BPM is Static, I'll open the song up in FL Studio and adjust the BPM of the project until it matches the song's. I do this by aligning up the beats to the metronome until they happen exactly at the same time consistently (this includes any and all BPM changes). Then, I input that BPM value into beat 0 of the chart, and start stepping from there.

When I feel the BPM is Dynamic, then I'll open it up in DDReam Studio, lay down some beats and align them up to the peaks as best as I can. Sometimes, one beat will be ~135BPM and the very next one could be ~129. It really is that kind of BPM fluctuation that I watch out for, and for me it makes the file more difficult to step.

As for what arrows I lay down, I just let my brain dictate what to step, and if I'm having trouble getting the note plaqcement to perfectly match up with a sound, I open up DDReam Studio and set the speed to 0.1x, then hit 1-2-3-4 at the very moment I hear the sound. For me, it's about...

This is my first time on FFR; I joined Stepmania.com the same day.

You can find me on Stepmania.com under "KingSpeedR34" (and I have exactly one post there).
