                                    Sucks for all the people who had legitimate content uploaded. But if Megaupload's employees really did condone piracy, it makes sense to shut them down.

                                                The problem isn't specifically that Megaupload was shut down. Big picture, if that was the full extent of it, it wouldn't matter. The problem is the ramifications. What does this mean for similar kinds of sites? And so forth.

                                                If Megaupload actually was condoning piracy and was not merely serving as a neutral tool and if that is the only reason they were shut down then I'm okay with this. Some sources seem to suggest as much. However, if they were merely serving as a neutral tool and/or if this also applies to services which are mere neutral tools, then justice was not served that day.

                                                The one thing I read which suggests they may have been condoning piracy (rather than serving as a neutral service) is that apparently rather than storing each upload individually, if any binary-compared equal to some existing upload then rather a link was stored to that original instead. And when a DMCA takedown notice was issued on any link, they only deleted links rather than the material actually stored on the servers. I don't know if that is true but if it is then that is reason enough to take them down (and a very stupid move on their part -- removes them from "safe harbor" and such).

                                                I guess we'll find out soon enough if other file storage sites start getting shut down.
