This has no direct correlation with SOPA, but part of me does wonder if the timing of this shutdown had to do with the "blackout" event that happened yesterday.

In any case, I'm wondering how much longer other popular file hosting sites like 4shared, Rapidshare, and Mediafire will have, since they all have bits of pirated content on their servers; they don't seem to be hesitant to bring down these sites, even if a majority of the content is legitimate. I personally can't understand the logic of bringing down a site where a very small portion of the material is violating DMCA laws -- it's ridiculous to pull something that could be holding personal content for many different people.

this whole deal is kinda shitty and all, and doesn't really bode well for other file sharing sites, but if you think this ruling has literally anything to do with SOPA and/or PIPA, you're ****ing stupid.

if anything it shows why SOPA/PIPA have been presented in the first place; people in congress know literally nothing about technology and care only about buying their seats back.

I feel like after the gov't agents shut megaupload down all of congress and government SOPA supporters went out for pizza and a movie in a limo blasting "*****s in paris" the whole way there to celebrate

my knowledge of this kind of stuff is not exactly extensive but this seems akin to money laundering? like, if some restaurant is known to be a front for a mob organization, even if there's nothing wrong or criminal about the restaurant itself or the products that restaurant makes/sells per se, it's still going to be shut down because it's a front for criminal activity. same deal here, if the government has to shut down a "legitimate" portion of megaupload to crack down on the piracy (which, as far as i can tell, is the dominant usage/portion of the website), then so be it.

I just find it funny how all the news articles I have read so far depict Megaupload as some crime syndicate that is like "notorious" and "a hub of piracy". None of the articles I have read so far actually tell the truth, like "Only about 20% (or some number) of the site had piracy in it."

Like I said in my last post (#82) anyone with a tiny bit of web knowledge and a server can put up that page, then share the IP around to make it sound "secret". The registrant is in Argentina, MegaUpload did not have any staff in South America. So unless download links suddenly appear, that's probably a fake.

Personally I believe UMG is involved in this somehow. That whole scandal with some of their artists appearing on a video put out by MU happened only a month ago. UMG has billions of dollars, and the feds love money.

Very valid point, and I actually never would have thought about it that way. It's quite unfortunate, though. A large majority of the site is catered to hosting large files for the sake of convenience.
