Should Major League Baseball implement the replay system?

After last night's nineteen inning game between the Pirates and the Braves, many people were out raged on how it ended. It was a classic play at the plate. The runner was blatantly out, but the umpire called him safe, thus ending the game.

Some of you might remember the "imperfect, perfect game", thrown by Armando Galarraga. Twenty-six straight outs. Last play, again, runner was blatantly out at first base. Umpire called him safe, ruining a PERFECT GAME.

My question: To prevent these incidents from occurring in the future, do you believe a replay system should be added to review and change bad calls made by umpires?

In this particular play, the runner still would have been called out with the replay because of the camera looking at the opposite direction.

In Armondo's "imperfect perfect" game, the runner would have been called out.

I could care less about baseball due to how boring it is, but I guess a relay system wouldn't hurt them.

baseball games r drug out long enough, i dont rly care enough 2 sacrifice 2 minutes every time a call iz disputed 4 the ump 2 walk 2 the booth and etc. plus it gives the fans sumthing to boo @ and cheer 4 whenever their manager gets ejected, it keeps the game dramatic.
sumtimes i do wish there was a replay system but all in all i dont think it would be bettr 4 the game viewing experience.

btw i wuz @ the rangers game last night, several v close calls but i think only one could have been turned over, also a v tuff loss :'(

Every other sport has one? Why not MLB?

Ya there should definitely be instant replay introduced to the game, but it must be done right. I have heard a bunch of suggestions like having a "5th umpire" who watches the game from the cameras and only intervenes on close calls, or allowing a manager to call for a replay over and over until he gets one wrong, or giving each team a set number of challenges. They are all valid ideas that aim to get the right call while minimizing the amount of disturbance it causes to the flow of the game.

Why don't they just "always" make calls based on the replay. Just eliminate the human error of the umpire altogether.

very yes. lots of really stupid calls could've been averted. problem is probably "how far could've he gone had he been safe" depending on the situation

i've never seen a baseball game in my life but your suggestion would complety kill the flow of the game in soccer

This. Why would you NOT want accurate refereeing? Does baseball become better in any way because umpires are allowed to make mistakes? Why would we agree with what a not-necessarily-impartial observer says, even if we know them to be wrong?

Re: Sould Major League Baseball impliment the replay system?

I seem to be a bit of a black sheep here, but I'm saying no for a number of reasons.

First, if a replay system were to be implemented, umpires would still be needed to make judgement calls on how much contact constitutes a foot on the base or a tag.

Second, the location of the strike zone changes based on the idiosyncrasies of each batter's height and stance. Attempting to rigidly define one (as with various TV aids like FoxTrax) would be, to put it frankly, a mistake.

Third, even if one were to be implemented, Bud Selig himself has said that there will be, for lack of a better word, no retconning of the course of a game. This came about as a result of what we in Detroit are more fond of referring to as the "extra perfect game" thrown by Galarraga, and as a bonus, both Galarraga and the umpire in question, Jim Joyce, handled themselves as perfect gentlemen about the mistake.

Besides, all instant replay does is slow down the action to the point where a more informed human decision can be made. It's still up to a human to make the call. Plus, it's always a bit of fun to watch the manager throw a fit when a call doesn't go his way.

Well the main arguments that a lot of baseball purists usually say is that it "removes the human element" from the game, or that it is not traditional. Both arguments I find are actually bullshit, the main problem is like Andrew said, it would slow down a game that a lot of people already find to be too slow.

Either way, these talks about replay usually just flare up once every few months when there happens to be a particularly bad call. The best solution would be a rarely used replay that would eliminate these once in a while ****-ups.

On a related note though, I was seriously considering designing a system that would detect whether or not a pitch was a ball or a strike with a pair of cameras mounted underneath the plate and pointing upwards, but never got around to doing it.

I don't think it would slow down the game much - you'd only have to look at calls that people on the field were complaining about. And for a game shown on TV, you could always check bad calls during the commercial breaks
