im probably the only person that takes the straw out by separating the extra wrapping from either side of the straw.

Nice thread. I used to bang the straw when I was a kid but I was constantly breaking my straws and it really pissed me off when I had like a juice box or those orange juice cartons that you can't really drink unless you HAVE a straw. Now I just tear off the top and grab the end with my teeth and pull it out.

Personally, I bang it on a flat surface but I am reconsidering just tearing off an end with my fingers because I am damaging way too many straws otherwise. It's just annoying when the straw wrapper is like a fukking hermetically-sealed plastic fortress of Zeus because then I almost HAVE to bang it (and like 50% of the time I wind up bending it).

whenever i need to band it i always grab at the bottom. the higher you grab the greater the chance of bending the straw when banging

Depends on the strength of the wrapper. If it's weakly bound, I'll just lay the straw on one end of the table (or just hold the straw) and push the wrapper down. The wrapper should separate as the straw pokes through.

Alternatively, I may just tear off the end of the wrapper on some occasions.

If the wrapping is tough, I see if I can make a little tear or nick in the middle of the wrapper and then rip it apart.

I've never needed to bang the straw (never even thought of that) nor tear the wrapping off with my teeth.
