Is this assuming that you don't write in script? I rarely write in print. I dot my i's at the end of a word because it makes more sense when you are writing in script.

I make a vertical stroke from top to bottom, dot the I, and then move on to the next letter from there

Tried this in my creative writing class when I was writing a poem about silence.

I dot them right away, unless I'm writing in cursive in which I'll wait until I'm finished writing out the rest of the word.

I dot the i's out of habit from when I was learning the alphabet as a kid. Not so much to distinguish l's from i's

I dot i's after the word. But, if I'm writing a paper fast, I just drag the tail of the word to the i. Stem: up first then back down.
