Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
not that it's a big deal(it's not) but how exactly do I suck at sarcasm? I'm failing to see how this is being turned against me just because you guys suck at interpreting sarcasm.
oh oh soooo sorry I didn't make it more obvious! Sorry your highness I'll work on it!
Izzy, great suggestion! =D
Back on topic. The only college I'm really interested in is UNL, and that may be the only place I apply for.Comment

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
I normally don't post in Chit Chat, but I'm almost done with college and choice of college is a subject I've had a lot of stress over so I'd really like to save people what I've been going through.
Unless it is extremely relevant to your major (that is, you have researched the faculty of that university and know enough about them to know more than just that it "has a good English program"), do not pick a college at which you will need to take out over $20,000 in student loans for in a 4-year span. You will be wasting a lot of money on a BA. The market is becoming increasingly saturated with college graduates holding only BAs; as such, your choice of grad school matters much more than undergrad. And I don't know of any grad schools that will ding you for going to a cheap university over an expensive one.Comment

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
What's very sad to me is that so many people have so much potential for a better life and are completely unaware of how close they are with just a little more effort.
I might start a thread on this.Last edited by Reincarnate; 12-28-2010, 07:18 AM.Comment

Majoring in English is a massive mistake, especially if you're paying for it.Comment

Penn State University
UMBC
University Maryland - College Park
Virginia Tech
James Madison University
University of Delaware
Howard Community College
The only way I'd wanna go to Community is if i couldn't get into my other choice schools financially or if I'd be easier to get into my choice school through transfer from HCC to one of my Maryland choices. I know the credits should be able to trasnfer.

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
Applying doesn't make someone smart.
<--- Getting in does
Although to be fair, OHN has killer stats. Top schools get more and more selective with each year... it's disgusting. Some schools are starting to dip further and further down into sub-10% admission rates. You not only need killer stats, but you need something to make you stand out, too. It's a pretty agonizing (but formulaic) process.Last edited by Reincarnate; 12-28-2010, 08:09 AM.Comment

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
Not only is it pretty useless for job prospects, but it isn't all that intellectually enriching (which is ultimately why we go to college in the first place). You'll find that plenty of non-English majors are not only better at writing, but are also just as good as contextual analysis/critical thinking. It's a massive waste of a major.
Almost every one of my fellow English grad friends had no job prospects upon graduation. Those that found jobs only got those jobs through connections/networking. Others went onto grad school and pursued something a bit more employable.
You're better off choosing something a little more practical AND enriching, again, especially if you're paying for it.Comment

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
If you want, sure. Minors don't have much impact on employability in general. They're really more like "extra skills I have on the side," so if you want to minor in English, it's all good.Comment

Re: High School Seniors, where are you applying?
I applied for Cognitive + Computer Science for AI. haha.
CMU is like 2nd or 3rd backup.
Also, I don't think it's really fair to judge what someone majors in if it's what they're interested in. Although choosing something such as 'The Classics' would be much more beneficial then a broad English degree..signatures are for nerds

There's nothing wrong with majoring in what you're interested in. But I think you're doing yourself a great disservice by throwing away a ton of money on something that doesn't require it.I applied for Cognitive + Computer Science for AI. haha.
