Need help with a new hard drive.

So it isn't exactly a new hard drive, but it's new to me and was given for free. I'm severely out of space, can't even store my music on my computer anymore, have to load it as it comes to my iPod, so I'm kinda hellbent on making it work in addition to my old one. Simply starting up the computer with either both or just that drive connected gets me a failure to boot. Right now I'm running Linux off a flash drive in an attempt to format the new-to-me drive, but it's failing to detect the drive. I've also tried installing XP onto it from a disk, but that fails and gives me an error code which tells me to do exactly what I'm trying to.
    Yes everything is connected properly.
Yes it's using the proper cables and it is the proper type for them.

The end goal is to have Linux on the newer one and XP on the old, if that makes it any easier for you lot. Any help will be much appreciated.

Is it an eide harddrive? You might have to set up the little prong things on the top to correctly match the master and slave configuration.

Don't think so. The connector has a much larger number of pins than that. Sorry i don't know much more about it, not the most knowledgeable on this sort of thing. The drive says it's ATA, if that's what you're looking for.

Yea, pretty sure its the kind of harddrive I am thinking of. It would look like this, with a big long connection.

But you still have to set those slave/master things if you are using more than one harddrive in your computer that are both using EIDE cables.

Mmkay, well I'm in the process of changing the jumper now, then, to see if that helps, but when I've tried booting with it as the only drive plugged in it still didn't function appropriately, if that changes things. If not and this works, then many thanks.

Glad I could help. I've had problem with this same thing before trying to get two older hard drives to work in my new PC.
