The problem that I have with people is they refuse to believe someone can be educated without formal education.

I've learned so many trade secrets from the best of the best, and when I'm in California I'm going to share as many as I can to the world, so that people become smarter, better people.

You guys just live off of random internet arguments, it's ridiculous.

Nobody here is saying that it's impossible to be educated without formal education. But you'd have to be crazy to think that the two situations are statistically comparable. When you're enrolled in school, you're surrounded by resources, faculty, peers, and opportunities that you just can't get anywhere else.

Granted, you're probably jumping at the screen now, "BUT WHAT ABOUT DA SKILLZ FROM THE STREETZ!" -- alright, there are certain "soft" attributes like networking skills, teamwork, eloquence, articulation, persuasiveness, etc, that are difficult to teach directly at most institutions and are best learned through experience or extensive classwork/projects/extracurricular activities. It's hard to know how to run a business well unless you've actually done it before.

But just because you decided to skip the "educational investment step" and jump straight into business doesn't mean you can crap on everyone else who hasn't had a chance yet to enter that stage of their lives. It's like that kid who turns 15 and suddenly discovers sex and brags to everyone else how much 15-year-old ass he scored last night. Fast forward 5 years later, and that kid is likely an STD-ridden high school dropout with mutated junk and a generous heaping of cold sores where lips once existed.

Up until now (sophomore year), the only programs we've used are Visual Studio for C# (and a bunch of addons, like AnkhSVN), jGrasp for Java, Photoshop, Flash, Flash Builder, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's it thus far. I didn't know anything except a bit of PHotoshop on starting, but that didn't put me behind the class at all after 2 weeks or so.

Wow really? Seems like a lot of stuff, and I've messed around with photoshop in high school, that's about it.

This is just for RIT's program, mind you. There's no real standard for teaching game design, so your experience will probably be incredibly different.

Wow really? Seems like a lot of stuff, and I've messed around with photoshop in high school, that's about it.

a lot of programming concepts translate fairly easily. there will always be a lot to learn. that's the fun part

Yeah man, people here are smart, I'm just saying no one gives me credibility because I "don't look like I can do it", so when people question me it gets under my skin.

I have plenty of corporate connections, but I don't want to get a white collar job like that, I am a self made man and will continue to be.

Most people can't do that, but I can. I can read body language better than anyone I know, and it really helps me in the situations I come across.

I literally could get ANY job if I wanted to, but I love what I do more than anything, so it's what I do.

And as far as the whole 15 year old stud thing goes, I don't go out and fool around as much as possible, but whenever I try, I score. I don't like shallow people at all

you're preaching to the choir, bro. do you realize the insanely high percentage of college students who drink, party, all that stuff? it's all good and fun, but people can enjoy themselves however they choose to.

psychoangel: from my fairly uninformed perspective, lawyer doesn't sound like a terrific fit for what you're looking for. I have to imagine there's plenty of off-the-job stress leading up to cases, which could make it tougher to spend quality time with the family. on the other hand, it would sure pay the bills.

psychology seems immensely interesting. I agree that it's not so guaranteed to produce financial security, though. what exactly is the job market for psychologists? all I can think of is psychiatry, haha.

Well you have psychologists which are just the people that people go to talk to about there problems and they offer advice. A psychologist usually makes around 50k a year but it really depends where you are.

A psychiatrist is someone that has to have a medical degree because they look for psychological disorders and prescribe medications. They make typically around 150k a year.

I don't mean enjoy yourself as in party. I just mean do fun things. As much as you can, instead of just saving up to one day have a lot of money. While you have no responsibility, go do something that one day will make a GREAT story. I've got a million from this year.

Oh, and I guess I forgot to stress the most important part, life IS NOT about the money. If you consume yourself with making money instead of being happy to earn money, than you'll NEVER be truly happy.

You don't need money to be happy. But it sure makes it easier to BE happy.

Again, most people experience maximal utility once basic things are fully taken care of. That means you make enough money such that you're not worrying about where your next meal is coming from. Or the next ten. Or hundred. You're not worried about making next month's rent/heating bill/loan payment. It means not worrying about saving up for your child expenses and education, or not worrying about spending a little money here and there to treat yourself to a fun dinner with friends/your boyfriend/girlfriend once in a while. It means having enough money to ensure that you can remain clean with new clothes and a nice bed to sleep in.

If you're in a situation where any of these things are a constant, lingering worry -- it's harder to be happy. You may be lucky enough to have a loving circle of friends/family/a fun career that helps offset any given lacking attribute, but ultimately, having enough money to grease the wheels is what gets the job done. Everything past that point has diminishing marginal returns.

I question you not because "you don't look like you can do it," but because the stuff you've said in this thread screams "I have no idea what I'm talking about."

And, again, you *can't* get any job you want without a college education. Plenty of places, if not most, almost require at least *something*. Otherwise, it's hard to even get an interview if your resume is essentially blank. Even if you land the interview, you're going to be competing against people who've spent years studying their trade already. You need to be a bit more realistic.

Yeah of course it makes it easier. I make plenty, but at the moment my profit had no meaning, so I didn't save an extravagant amount, but yeah obviously people have concerns.

I just don't like getting flashy, or people that are greedy. Greed ruins people. Money doesn't, but greed most certainly does.
