2010 World Series (TEX v SFG)

What a surprise! No rematch after Texas eliminated the Yankees after 5 games and what has turned into an interesting World Series now after the Giants defeated the Phillies in 6 games.

Before I continue, I just have to say the Phillies fans are assholes. In the 9th inning, after Torres (Giants) dove into first for a bunt-single and complained a bit about knee pain, Phillies fans got tired of waiting and started booing. If you're tired of waiting and want to boo, go to a Philadelphia Union game. It's common in soccer; not in baseball.

    Now moving along...

Since the National League won the All-Star Game, they will have home-field advantage.

I was rooting for the Phillies only to see Halladay win the World Series. I can't believe they lost to the Giants. Meh.

I could care less for either of the teams. But as an American League fan I'm definitely rooting for Texas. Congrats for both teams to make it this far, unexpectedly at least in my book.

Although I could care less about baseball, the Giants are my home team, so gotta go with them. I don't follow any teams at all, but I'd like the opinion of someone who's followed both the Giants and Rangers as to who they think is going to win it.

Despite being a huge Ranger fan and homer, I'll have to say that there is no clear favorite in this matchup. Here's my entirely-too-long-for-this-message-board breakdown:

Pitching and Defense: The pitching staffs are pretty equal: Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee are both transcendent aces. The Giants have two solid No. 2 and 3 starters in Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez, but the Rangers can counter with C.J Wilson and the highly underrated Colby Lewis. Both bullpens are excellent (Giants bullpen pitched 7 shutout innings against the Phillies to clinch the NLCS; Rangers bullpen was among the tops during the regular season) although the Texas relievers showed some vulnerability when they allowed 6 runs in the 8th inning of Game 1 of the ALCS versus the Yanks. For the closers, Brian Wilson is tremendously solid for the Giants while Neftali Felix broke the record for saves in a season by a rookie and is a leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. And as far as I can tell the defense behind both teams' pitchers is solid, though I've watched significantly more Rangers baseball than Giants baseball.

Offense: The Texas offense led the majors in team batting average and have several power bats such as Nelson Cruz and AL MVP candidate Josh Hamilton. On the other hand, Cody Ross has been hot for the Giants this postseason and their team seems to get a clutch hit whenever they need one (see Juan Uribe's solo homer in the 8th inning of Game 6 to win the NLCS). The Rangers like to run wild on the base paths which is either a hit or a miss. Since the Giants' catcher is rookie Buster Posey I'd say the Rangers are likely to take those risky chances again this series. I don't know how the Rangers will deal with the no-DL situation when they play in San Fran, but I'd still give the Rangers offense the upper hand in this department.

Experience/Intangibles: The Rangers have a World Series clutch pitcher in Cliff Lee (dominated with the Phillies during their championship run in 2008) and a playoff-hardened catcher in Bengie Molina, but outside of them the Ranger roster is really lacking in postseason experience. Can't say it has affected them so far though, seeing as how they conquered both the Rays and Yankees despite being massive underdogs in both series. The Giants are in a similar situation, since Pat Burrell is the only World Series winner on their roster that I can think of off the top of my head. Both teams have great fans and great stadiums which will provide an excellent environment for games. In addition, the Giants have not won a championship in 60 years while the Rangers had never even won a playoff series let alone reach a World Series in their 40+ years of existence (in fact, they only had one postseason win before this year). So that novelty factor applies to both teams.

Overall, I don't see any big differences or advantages in this series. We'll see how it plays out and go Rangers!

Hey, anything that happened during the preseason, season, and playoffs mean NOTHING now. Both teams earned the right to be here. Especially SF. They knocked out probably the best team in baseball. However, Texas is more disciplined it seems when it comes to swinging and letting it go. In all honesty, I think SF will win this for there amazing display of teamwork.

Giants all the way in either 5/6 games.

Just thought I'd give this a bump because game 1 was last night. I didn't get to watch it, but it was a pretty high scoring game. Giants - 11 Rangers - 7.

At this rate I'm going to have to go with Rangers in 7, I have faith in them tonight to bring it to 2-2.
Cliff Lee will pitch game 5 in a National stadium (which is where he's used to pitching, in light of his national league career) and pull out a win since he HASN'T had 8 days of rest this time.
CJ Wilson will probably follow in the rotation and screw up, making it 3-3, unless the Rangers go wild on the bases. It's safe to expect game 6 to be high scoring.
Game 7 will be closed out by our lord and savior Colby Lewis
