Re: Solve this equation for me

    yeah i guess

My fault was only trying to solve it by some sort of divide-and-conquer approach.

Maybe I would get the right answer if I tried to think otherwise..

Still I like your approach, haha, cool way of going at it -- give that card problem a shot though... that ****er's hard as nuts imo.

I'll just be satisfied with the first $1 I gain and leave (jk)

edit: I'm going to work on this problem later, as I have an exam on Thursday..

Re: Solve this equation for me

                            Here's a quick thought:

Do the same thing as the two-balls version. i.e. drop the first ball from floor 14, 27, etc,

and then use the remaining two balls, instead of one ball in the previous problem, to check the exact location, by using the same method as the solution of the previous problem.

edit: I think we need to increase the floor gap for the first ball in order to get lowest maximum drops

So say it breaks at 99 -- then you drop the second sphere until you hit floor 99 from the previous droppoint. You need to check floors 96, 97, and 98, and you have two spheres left. Normal solution is to use one sphere on 96, 97, 98. 1+2 = 3, so 2 is my worst case first-drop point under your strat. I could drop my second sphere on 97, then. If it doesn't break, I drop on 98 and I find my floor. If it breaks, I drop on 96 and find my floor.

So in this worst-case scenario, I only save one drop and can guarantee 13 -- you can do better!
