Well, that's not an overly used stereotype. You don't write music in a band, you compose. Writing is either A: Song Lyrics or B: Writing notes. Coming up with what sounds good with your ever so generic ( which I am sure your 'band' uses) drum beat is not writing.

putting some chords together for one instrument isnt composing. composing is writing music for a plethora of instruments to be played together (much like an orchestra)
