What in the world is this?

Randomly when I'm on this forum, some webpages will play music at me...

This is incredibly annoying. Is it one of the ads? It's techno-type music that sounds like something I'd hear in FFR. And no, I don't have FFR open.... and when I close the forum page, the music stops.

I don't really know where else to post this. It's INCREDIBLY irritating for webpages to play music without me asking them to. I often listen to music on my computer, and it interferes with it, or maybe my sound is way up and I'm not expecting anything, and suddenly it just plays...

The first time it happened was a few days ago, and it just happened again right now, when I had my Control Panel open.
C is for Charisma, it's why people think I'm great! I make my friends all laugh and smile and never want to hate!

    You're lucky.
I just get forcefully redirected recently to some ads from the front page, levelrank, and forums.

Re: What in the world is this?

I personally just subscribe and don't have to deal with it.

I do a double subscription. FFR accidentally started charging me monthly in addition to yearly, and I left it that way because I'd rather support FFR.

I suggest some of you do the same. It's not that expensive, though I won't preach at you. /shrug

Ask synth or something I guess.

I think this happened to Patashu awhile ago...

I've heard of this problem though, and I don't really know what to say. He hasn't said anything about it recently, so I guess the problem went away for him.

          EDIT:

I've had this happen too, except an infomercial thing starts playing. I'll be reading along and all of the sudden...

The following advertisement is brought to you by [insert stalker here]...

I scroll all around looking for an ad to block, but nothing. And it's not my computer, because it ONLY does this on the FFR forums.

Re: What in the world is this?

I once encountered this on FFR on Firefox last summer, but I haven't had it happen again. Even back then, it only occurred maybe 2-3 times on one day, then stopped. I also got what Crashfan got during that time also, but that only happened twice.

Re: What in the world is this?

I absolutly hate having to wait to browse the forum because some idiot wants me to see a zwinki ad.
I also hate being re-directed to Cash4gold dot com without clicking anything.
I also hate "CONGRATULATIONS YOUR A WINNER" suprising me out of the speakers when im trying to be sneaky and peek into ffr when im at work.

These ads must go. I know it's not what you're talking about, but it's similar in nature.

Oh yeah go play emotions in ffr and see if it's the same song. dance 1 genre

Regular users shouldn't be punished with annoying ads just because they don't feel like shelling out money each year. subscribing was supposed to be a way of supporting ffr, not hiding from ads.

Well maybe Synth Needs to have these annoying adds.
Think about the site population vs the income off of not-so-annoying adds.

funny, other sites with less traffic seem to do just fine with less intrusive ads

Re: What in the world is this?

Synth does not need those specific ads. They don't directly pay ffr. If you had any idea of how advertising works on the internet, you would know that websites like ffr are paid by a service to host a bundle of ads (think of it like someone giving you a sack with 200,000 ads and everytime someone loads a page one of those ads gets displayed). FFR isn't payed by each individual company in the ad bar (not directly at least)

Synth can go into that bundle and delete the ads he doesn't want to display. Thats how he got rid of the some of the more questionable ads when ads were first implimented. Synth gets paid reguardless of if those 6 or 7 ads show.

I think I remember Synth saying something a while ago about how he'd remove ads that were redirecting people or being really annoying, but that he just didn't know which ones they were. So if you can isolate the ad that's doing the redirecting or music, try sending an e-mail to Synth... it can't hurt. I think he'd like to have only non-annoying ads as much as everyone else would.
