    I'm so ****ing pissed...

    While I was sleeping from 5 am this morning, I woke up and my C Drive got infected with this recycler virus, and I couldn't backup any data or system restore, and had to start over with nothing. Some of my data was from torrents and sites that have went down, and I don't believe I'll be able to get it back. =/ Not too much information, but some I used very often.

    My avast antivirus randomly turned into a trial version and stopped working a few days before, so I have no idea if it could have been prevented. >_>

    Main points though I want to know where this virus could have shown up from, and if I should stick with avast and find a license key, or switch to another protection software to avoid getting this virus or something like this.

      Well it was probably from a torrent given the info shown in the op.

          Mcafee is a pretty good antivirus if you are going to buy. Avast is pretty good for a free one, but it probably just went to trial version randomly because your subscription ended

              Those torrents were from like long ago, ~1-2 years lol. Probably all dead. =/

              So I have no idea where it showed up from.

                          This computer already has Norton from 2005, and back when I used to use it I didn't get too many viruses, but I get bombarded with spyware and malware way more often.

                          Think I tried McAfee but didn't keep it around for some reason.

                          I'm not that worried about getting a virus since I went about 6 months with no protection and didn't get anything, but I really want to be safe from having to reformat and redownloading everything. -_-

                              I use norton and nothing bad has ever happened

                              I used to use nothing and then I got a nasty virus, so I had to reformat. That's when I started using something, and since then, yeah

                                  I've got CA Security center here. Works fine. And yea, I had Norton before as well. Something about changing the date on your computer and being able to keep it forever. I think that's all gone now but either way that sucks for you. I've had a few viruses like that. That's why I've got my 200G hard drive to back it all up onto. Though I did loose 1,000 songs that I had forgot to back up. I still got the other 4K though. I need to torrent more.

                                                  I've mostly only downloaded things I've received direct links to from friends in real life, which I've seen their computers and no problems occured, or trustworthy people here on FFR.

                                                  My mom's friend was over last night and used the computer, which I didn't like because its mine and ever since my uncle got massive spyware from a myspace link, I don't trust others using it. He could have been an idiot and infected it with a dating site or a link from one.

                                                  It was PERFECTLY fine before I went to sleep, and was ****ed when I woke up. So something must have happened, right? =P

                                                  I have only like 15 sites total in my favorites for all my needs online, so searching through unknown sites isn't "my" problem. xD

                                                      If you can stop being cheap and maybe pay for the cheaper things, you won't have these problems.

                                                      And if you pull the "I'm too poor" card, do this. Have only the files you need/want sent from a friend over gmail. Gmail scans all files sent to you for free and will warn if you if something is detected. If it is a song or smaller file, have it sent over AIM which does the same thing with a comparable scanner. If you are going for just a song, use an audio ripper and rip the audio from a youtube video for free. No viruses and you get good quality mp3s and even mp4s.

                                                      And if you get a hankerin for porn, and I am sure most of you do, just stick to better quality sites or lurk the ever misused google image search instead of hunting down obscure free sites that exploits Tanzanian sex slaves and their ears/lips/other freakish fetish parts.

If the website is going to give you malware you can get it by visiting the site OR using googles. Google filters out many harmful sites but this still isn't a great bet as you'll still get tons of tracking cookies and other crap.

                                                          Just get porn from a good chan site and if you insist on browsing to sketchy webpages install NoScripts and use firefox.
