National Portfolio Day is an event specifically for visual artists and designers. It is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Representatives will be available to review your artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional careers in art. High school students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and college transfer students are encouraged to attend.
Today was NPD at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) here in Virginia. Quite a handful of art schools came from all around the country and even one from Paris, France.
So did anyone go? Or if you didn't, would you plan on going next year?
I went today... literally just woke up, ate breakfast, and drove on down to VCU to wait in line for about 2 1/2 hours outside and then inside to get my portfolio reviewed by Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida.
I'm glad I went because I got some really good feedback, and since I'm a Junior in HS this year, I have an entire year to improve on my work. I was told that my work was admissible but not scholarship material and he told me the reasons why...Anyway I'm just posting this here for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the arts. And don't get me wrong - it's not just painting and ceramics and all that traditional type of stuff anymore... There were quite a few colleges/universities there that offered programs such as Game Design, Animation, Digital Film, Fashion, Photography...
You'd be amazed at how many art careers will be offered in the next 5-10 years.
So if you didn't make it this year, go next year. ;3 The location is different every year as well, but it's usually here on the east coast because... well, there are a ton more art colleges in this area.
