there are 30 teams in MLB... MLB = major league baseball. each major league team has a series of minor league teams associated with it, at different levels. this is known as a farm system. AAA, AA, A, and rookie leagues. generally, players get drafted and sent to rookie ball or A ball, then work their way up through the levels to the majors. there are also some independent leagues that are not associated with any teams, but still have different levels of talent.
as far as the dominant teams of the 30... the Yankees are the premier team, having won 26 of the 105 world series and played in a bunch more. Other big named teams are the Red Sox, the Cubs, the Cardinals, and the Dodgers. The Phillies have only won 1 world series in 105 years... and are the first team in professional sports history to have 10,000 losses. so, no, they're no Chelsea.
