Re: End Of The World Wednesday?

I'll give my two cents worth.

My brother, father and I have been discussing this in somewhat great detail. This LHC is NOT supposed to end the world but rather create a small black hole (in theory) that will produce large amounts of attainable energy. Either that or just give us a better understanding of "dark matter" and this "God particle" the Higgs Boson.

As for Wednesday's launching, no, there was no collision. They were just testing to see if the protons would actually complete a circuit around the entire LHC. They did this both counter/clockwise. Projected date of collision is sometime in October, so you may have your suspense until then.

We got into a discussion about the collision possibly creating a quasar in the Pacific Ocean. The date that we prodict this quasar to happen would be right around our favorite apocalyptic date 12/20/2012 (or somewhere in that month and year).

In my own oppinion, an 8th grade oppinion, this won't end the world. I've honestly held true to my belief of the apocalypse on 2012, but I have plenty of influences to make me believe that they are telling the truth about that date. These protons that are supposed to combine and create a blackhole in the LHC will not form a space-time rift therefore not being a true recreation of a blackhole (where the black hole consumes a substance and throws it somewhere else).

You don't understand anything about what the Higgs boson is, what the LHC is for, or what a Black Hole is or does. You also have some misgivings about the supposed End of Days, which is actually only alluded to because of the Mayan calendar having nothing beyond December 21st, not because there is any truly detailed reason for the world ending at that time. Furthermore, there is no evidence suggesting a quasar will develop as a result of the collider, because a quasar is a quasi-stellar radio source; a quasar is "a compact region 10-10000 Schwarzschild radii across surrounding the central supermassive black hole of a galaxy." Basically, the LHC would need to produce a supermassive black hole, that black hole would need to be the center of a galaxy, then form a quasar around the center (if this were to somehow happen, we'd all be dead and the entire galaxy as it exists now would be pretty ****ed up).

              Also, you're in 8th grade.

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?

The world will end...and I have a theory:

                [Super Chaotic Theory of Stupidafication!]
If the world does end, it'll end with hyper beams from the sky that shoot from the sun after global warming occurs and super-powered gundams come from another dimension so the chosen heroes can use them to deflect the beams, but then a humongous pikachu appears to step on the gundams, killing humanity's last hope, but suddenly Bill Gates shows up in his jetpack and fires a laser cannon, oblitering the pikachu and the sun's beams and returning it to normal. The world is saved, but a single beam not stopped in the crisis hits the planet and blows it to smithereens!

Nice, huh? I just predicted the end of the world. Now pay up! I want my money in cash!

The Calendar resets on the 21st of December, it doesn't even end.

Also our solar system goes through the Galactic equator on the 21st, Something that has supposedly never happened before.

                          That's bull**** propaganda.

Point me to a mainstream scientific source suggesting that something of galactic importance will happen on that day of that year and I will consider it, but until then, I'm going to continue dismissing it as abject stupidity.

ps omg viewzone.com LOOOOOOOOOOOOL how can you even consider that a reasonable source?

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?

I'm a particle physicist, and all I have to say is...HIGGS BOSON PWNS ALL PARTICLES!
Higgs Boson is the particle that supposedly gives matter its mass.
Higgs Boson is really heavy compared to all other particles.
Gauge bosons, to which family the Higgs Boson belongs, convey the forces of nature to all particles accross the universe, traveling at or lower than the speed of light (depending on whether or not the gauge boson has mass)
Particles CRASHING INTO ONE ANOTHER AT A COMBINED SPEED OF 199.9982% THE SPEED OF LIGHT explode and turn into a multitude of other particles, among them, hopefully, the Higgs Boson. I say "hopefully" because all of quantum physics is ruled by probability.

That's it for today's German class--I mean, Particle Physics lesson. Auf Wiedersehn.
