The reason why you shouldn't talk to the police is because something can come back to haunt you.

You may get carried away and tell a lie.

    You may incriminate yourself.

Oh God. It's impossible to explain. Just watch the damn video. It is worth it. Never talk to police officers, even if you're innocent, never lie, the entire interview is videotaped, etc.

EDIT: What do you think a cop would do if after pulling you over and they ask you "Do you know how fast you were going?" and you respond "I plead the 5th."?
    He'd call you a moron.

Oh, but you still shouldn't incriminate yourself. You have fourth amendment rights, and the officer knows why he arrested you. That's all you need to know. And you can act on that.

This was an extremely influential watch. Thank you, Guido.

I thought I would stop watching, but I watched both parts the whole way through. Great vid, Guido.

Also, if a cop pulled you over, you wouldn't "plead the 5th" if he asked you "Do you know what speed you were going?" You would just say, "No." You're not admitting anything with that statement; it's already an impromptu interview, so just say no.

Getting pulled over for speeding is a different scenario.

You can plead the fifth in traffic court but it won't work.

Honestly, speeding tickets probably aren't worth the effort to deal with in this way. All a ticket really is is a court summonings--either that or admit guilt, pay a fine, and avoid court altogether. Considering the ridiculous costs of legal battles, especially in relation to a speeding violation, the only situation in which I could see someone really wanting to fight a speeding ticket would be if they have an absolutely spotless criminal record and are anal about keeping it that way. Either that, or they lose their license if they're convicted.

Re: Don't talk to the Police

If you say "No." then you're admitting that you weren't paying attention to how fast you were going. The police officer could lose respect for you and decide to ticket you.

If you say "Yes." you're admitting to breaking the law knowingly. The police officer could decide that since you admit readily that you also think you're ready to pay the consequences.

If anything, it's just worth not pissing off the police officer because speeding, as long as it isn't ridiculous, isn't that big of a deal. Not that it doesn't cost a lot of money even if you do go to court about it...

Re: Don't talk to the Police

Haha, I posted these videos in a MySpace bulletin and one of my friends got really angry about it. I know he's really big on the military, particularly the USMC, and I'm positive he wants to serve now that he's graduated, so that's probably why he's so angry about this.

I don't know why, though. I mean, it's hard to find a way to take offense to this. I'm sure he'd agree with me if I said that "The police can find a way to make anything you say work against you," but I doubt he'd agree that the Fifth Amendment makes you immune to saying anything. Even if I convinced him of that, he'd say it was an un-American thing to do, because it disrupts the justice offered by our legal system.

tl;dr my friend on MySpace got mad at these videos because he's an idealist that doesn't see the legal system for what it is

Your friend got mad because people are exercising one of their rights.

Your friend isn't an idealist, he's an idiot.
