    Will my kitty be okay?

I am having problems with my twelve-year-old female Persian mix becoming too vocal and going outside of her litter box. She has been declawed for almost most of her lifetime, spayed and been using her litter box at a young age, doesn't live with any other cats, and my family adopted her 4-5 years ago from our old neighbors because she was unhappy due to their new puppy and one of the dogs she grew up with passed away months before. She is also allergic to anything with fish in it because eating it makes her throw up.

For over a month she's been meowing constantly, usually when no one's around. It’s the worst at night when she wakes me and my parents up around midnight and early in the morning, usually around 4 and 6 am. The meow is not like when she wants to talk. It sounds like complaining, crying or whining. She also wants to go outside onto the back deck or into the garage at least once a day. My cat enjoys lying out in the sun on warm days on the deck. She also is refusing to go in her litter box once a week at least but is still using it. When she goes outside of her litter box, it’s in the hallway in front of the upstairs bathroom, in the upstairs bathroom or my parents' bathroom. What really doesn't help is that every room, except for the kitchen and laundry room, has carpeting.

We tried cleaning out her box every other day, ignoring her, telling her to be quiet and squirting her with a squirt bottle full of water whenever she gets out of line but so far it hasn't worked. For cleaning the mess we tried using Resolve, Resolve Pet Stain, Spot Shot and other carpet cleaners and stain removers but she'll go in or near that area the next day or so. We don't want to pay an arm and a leg just to make sure she doesn't urinate in that same area again.

She has plenty of food and water and is eating and drinking it so that's not the problem. However, she sometimes pushes the food into her water and we have to a separate bowl of clean water for her to drink from when that happens. We haven't changed the brand of litter for years and the brand of dry food for months. I took the lid of her litter box since I read that covering it makes it smellier and I can't move its location due to lack of private areas in the house. She doesn't meow or complain while in the litter box so I don't think she's in pain when she urinates.

I like having her around but I'm tired of her misbehaving and my mom yelling, threatening, hitting, punishing her and sometimes picking her up and tossing her to the floor. She avoids her whenever she goes outside of it or has gotten into trouble in the last couple of days. I want her to be well-behaved and healthy and not worry about the extra costs of seeing a vet and getting medication. Money and time has been tight for me due to high gas prices and college.

Here's a picture of her. It may be a few years old, but she hasn't changed in appearance:

      Sounds like she's senile.

Re: Will my kitty be okay?

Yeah, 12 is pretty old for a cat, hate to tell you, but she'll be gone soon =/
The cat looks really nice, I think when I move out I'll get a cat of that type if I can. Although I don't think in declawing cats is a very nice thing to do, I would never ever let that happen to any of my cats

Cats meowing at night is pretty common, they just want some attention pretty much, when my mom takes the dogs out for a walk my cats stand and the windows/doors and cry/meow.

There's nothing wrong with your cat except being old.

Re: Will my kitty be okay?

Hm, I personally have three cats (looks at one that's curled up against my thigh at the moment) and we've been having some similar problems. We had a cat that lasted until he was 18 years old so pay no attention Tera, depending on the cat and how well you've taken care of he/she may still have a few years to go.

Anyways, regarding the going to the bathroom in places other than the litterbox. My first advice would be to maybe try using a different litter. I have a cat that doesn't like to use the litter box because usually it's nasty but since you've said you've been cleaning it pretty often, try switching to a different brand and see where that gets you.

On the other hand shouting at a cat is going to get you no where fast I'm afraid. Recently we (my family and I) were having issues with my cat spraying in the laundry room suddenly and what we did to halt this behavior was one; to not let them into that room and two; to also at the same time do you give your cat enough attention? Its because we have three cats sometimes the cat we were having problems with wouldn't get as much and so we started to single him out more and more with attention and as a result he stopped spraying. I don't think you mentioned how much affection you've been giving her but as a college student I know sometimes things can get over looked but one way to make her feel more secure, if that's the problem in this case, is give her some extra attention so that she knows that this is her place and that she's loved.

Spraying for cats is often times a sign of insecurity within their surroundings and as such attempt to claim it as their own territory. Even within our house, we have one cat that's always in my parents room and then the other two rule mainly the upstairs while the dowstairs belongs to the one cat.

Do something every now and then to add a little spice to their life, I rarely buy beef jerky but when I do I always give the crumbs to my cats and they just go absolutely crazy over it. So finding a new cat food might not be such a bad idea either.

Hope this helps even just a little bit, if you have any more questions you can feel free to PM me any time.

Heh, not quite. I could never be a vet, I can't deal with animals being in pain even if it is to help them. I'm just good with animals and I've grown up always having a cat in the house. :3

My oldest cat right now is 15 I believe, I'm just saying that a lot of cats die earlier. All her babies died already, she had 5, we sold 4 of them, the one we kept died when it was 4 I think.

I'm not saying no cat has ever lived past 12 -_-

I didn't think you were. And yeah I think I have a cat that's about 12 right now or something like that. And how did it die at only 4/5 years old? o.0

Re: Will my kitty be okay?

I'm not actually sure, the cat was breathing heavy and just laying down for a few days for a few days. From there, about 3 days later I'd say is when he died, I was only like 8 or 9 when that happened, and now that I think of it, I wonder if my mom even called a vet

That's the same way the first cat I knew died, I have no clue how old he was, I would have to say older than the oldest we have right now, but I'm really not sure at all.

Re: Will my kitty be okay?

Hm, my first guess would be suffocation, maybe was choking on something that was blocking the air ways, hence the heavy breathing in an attempt to get more air but I dunno.

However I do recall hearing that sometimes heavy breathing CAN be a sign of heart disease. Don't quote me on that however it could have been a respiratory infection. But then again this is me merely guessing here.

Regardless I'm sorry that happened to your cat. :/

EDIT: I checked online about the heart disease thing and it seems like that's true in some cases.

My cat does almost all those things mentioned in the OP except for going outside of his litterbox, and he's 3 years old. He spills his water and food all over the floor sometimes, he throws up in the morning sometimes too. The only time he meows at night/when he's alone, is when he wants attention - but that's hardly never.

Mistreating your cat won't do anything for her except make her feel even more miserable and helpless. You should really tell your mom to stop that. :/
