West Coast VS East Coast

I was born in California (Orange County) where I lived for 5 or so years before moving to Virginia. Since then I have gone back to visit just about every summer for vacation. Last summer when I was out there I was buying my cousins ice cream in a Cold Stone. The chick working behind the counter was really busy so when she gave my cousins and me our ice creams, she left to go help someone else before I had paid for it. Thinking she had forgotten, I asked out out, "so wait, do I pay for this now or ...?"

The guy who was standing behind me very happily answered, "oh no, didn't you hear, it's free today! You can just go ahead and leave!" Being the friendly and sociable person I am, I naturally replied with "Oh great, free ice cream!"

After the chick came back and I paid, I walked outside to where the rest of my family was waiting and I came to a sudden realization. I thought to myself:

"What if that man had said that exact same thing to someone else on the east cost?" I decided it probably would've gone something like this:

East Coast Man: "So wait, do I pay for this now or ...?"

Affable Californian: "oh no, didn't you hear, it's free today! You can just go ahead and leave!"

At this point, without even hesitating, the East Coast man would've pulled out a knife, and stabbed the californian right in the face. The person waiting behind the californian would've caught the body falling without a thought, then handed it off to two men who would be standing by to throw it into a trunk, and then into a river.

There's no WAY you could get away with saying that kind of crap here in the east coast.

Has anyone else who's been acquainted with both sides of the United States noticed how drastically more mean the East Coast is?

Heh. That was an entertaining story. Perhaps I'll go to the west side someday to see.

I lived in Georgia, Florida, and New York for many years, and the violence level there is much lower there then it is here, frankly. Yes, many gangs originated in the East Coast, given that much of the Wast wasn't populated 100 years ago. But I don't hear as many reports of violence there as I do here; at best it is equal. But I do not find the statement that the East Coast is more violent then the west plausible, but considering where I live, my views might also be somewhat distorted (Nevada currently).

i was born in los angeles & ive gone to ranco cucamonga before too & some other cities but people do seem to be meaner or whatever in certain places.i do think that you shouldve just left wit the ice cream without paying lol

My friend and I were in line at a Coldstone very recently and he went to order some icecream. The woman at the counter asks "What size do you want?", my friend responds "What size is your smallest?" When the woman points to the ridiculously small container hanging from the ceiling, he says "Is that really the small size?" and the woman answers "No, I was kidding. This is the real one." and points to the one marked "Large".

By the way I live on the East Coast, so there's a bit of a counterarguement. But most of the time, I have to agree with you.

I live here in Ohio nearby Cleveland, but I've also spent plenty of time on the West coast. Over here on the East, it truely is more harsh and mean, especially in Cleveland. I remember during the summer there was a news story about a murder like once a week =/

Also, many students in some schools here will not hesitate to take their knuckles straight to the your face just for talking to them in even a tiny bit different tone. I have such a person in my math class who yells at anyone who basically directs any conversation by her.

Yeah I'm not saying there aren't any nice people on the east coast or that there isn't any violence on the west coast. I'm just saying in general, to someone you meet on the street, if you were to say hi to them in the west coast, they would smile and say hi back. However, if you said hi to someone in the east coast, they would glare and probably hit you in the face.

Here in Chicago, we respond to sarcasm with more sarcasm. There will be no violence other than the bad things that are said, or yelled, from person to person. I guess its just how we do things. Its a mix of both east and west.
