Yeah, I was like...wtf is he stalking me? It's cool though.

And yeah, for anyone who may be lost, my last name is Bender. ^_^ I had a Futurama avatar for a really long time (it was Bender sitting on a couch kicked back with a beer in his hand), but no one knew what my last name was, so the significance wasn't there for anyone but me.

          K. Done being off topic.

the idea of being a kid going to school spending a giant chunk of your life there so you can be educated and if you put effort toward it you can get better jobs and make more money and then you get married and have kids and you work and raise kids and then you retire and roll around in a wheelchair and die disgusts me and once i realized that i was not satisfied by this concept i stopped caring about school and thought on a larger scale

The high school I'm currently supposedly has ridiculously strict requirements (Basically straight A's, scoring ridiculously high on the placement tests, being able to not be a nerd and be smart at the same time blahblahblahblahblah). I was accepted after a rather tedious process, and once I walked into the school, I was surrounded by quite a few morons who didn't know West Virginia was a state.

[QUOTE=Problems;2050244]I can't understand why such an excellent establishment founded by the high and mighty Bill Gates would have 40 students enrolled. As in you don't pay a dime to go to this school (other than fees for books etc.)?/QUOTE]

Yeah, all tuition is payed for.

I understand making a critical life decision like this at 14 is some serious stuff. But I've been talking about this since 13, and even now I haven't fully decided on my future yet, though I have a good idea of what it will be. But I HAVE decided on how my education goes. Because think of it this way. If I have no plan for my future, then how will I make it in life? How can I plan my education so that I can get the highest quality life afterwards? How will I know what my life will be like?

                    ~Bynary Fission

Meh. I gave up on school. Life's not long enough to waste 13 or more years on things that either you don't need to know or you'd already learn.

I love learning, but I don't love being forced into a freezing, boring classroom by law and doing hours of pointless, tedious work that will have no educational benefit.

That's school. A waste of time.
College is a bit different, since there are more options, but it's still bad.

I wish you the best of luck.

I appreciate your wishes. However, you said that you gave up on school, because you'd learn it anyways, or it has no educational benefit. Well, you aren't going to learn it without going to school, so why not go? While some of it is indeed useless, a lot of the other things are critical, especially when learning high-octane stuff. You can't do calculus without learning addition.

Now yes, I HATE the one-size fits all system. I don't fit in with the standard system, and I don't fit in the gifted system. So....I devised my own, ultra-customized educational plan. Man, education opens so many doors up. The job I am taking doesn't even need a high school diploma (Video game programming; I could drop out, and program games with other kids like me). But, I am shooting for college. Trust me, it may seem worthless now, but unless you are one of the very lucky few who can make it big without a degree, then you'll probably not make it anywhere. Education is the most valuable thing, even if it seems stupid (All my classes are too easy, I know what it feels like to want to drop out). But it'll be totally worth it to get that education. And THAT is what drives me forward.

Re: So I Found About this new High School...

You have to remember..just cause the school is founded by Bill Gates (wealthy guy, businessman) doesn't mean it's as high quality as you think. Remember the main goals of business people is to make a profit.

Look at schools that offer distance learning courses or are private schools (University of Phoenix, DeVry, Bryman, etc)..their quality of education really suffers and aren't as high as they could be.

Also, you say that your job you're aspiring for is to become a video game programmer. Now how do you think you're able to attain such a job? Do you think you can just learn the programming non-systematically on your own & then apply hoping they'll hire you? No. I would say for jobs that you might specifically apply to in at LEAST 4-8 years (depending if you attend this school), BS/BA degrees will be required from an accredited or real university (State University, Highly Accredited/Acclaimed private universities, etc).

My 2 cents. You're young & you may think you're mature but you don't know the jist of it. Don't ruin teh future!

I understand about the risks of it. I and my mom are looking into it.

And lol, who ever said I would apply for a company? I HATE working in places like that. Really, I intend to do it independently. And yeah, I do intend to teach the code to myself. It's very easy, I just need a book to continue learning it, because I can never concentrate when reading online, and online is not advanced. The high school is located on the campus of a college, it pays for all tuition and other fees. That is a deal I can't pass up; so far it offers more opportunity than anything else I've seen. Believe me, contrary to what everybody thinks, I didn't make these decisions on a whim. I have put years of thought into exactly how I will plot out my future/education, and how I will attain it.

I had a private school I attended in 5th and 6th grade. Best years of my life.

And for distance education, that is what I am currently doing. So easy....I know what it is like, from personal experience. I am taking 9 classes at once, and it is still so easy...

It's very difficult to find independent programmers out there without a day job. Definitely something you need to factor into the equation, as that seriously cuts into 'all the programming time' you think you'll have at this stage.

And there's nothing wrong with finishing high school early and moving on to college. The problem comes when these very young students are dropped pretty much completely on their own. If you have support coming from somewhere then I don't see you having trouble.

Plus I teach high school and I see students who are well above the intellectual level of their peers and I see students who think they are well above the intellectual level of their peers and both types of students benefit from learning to interact with people their age. In any walk of life you are going to meet people you think are complete idiots, and you will be forced to work with those people.
I can agree with that. However, I didn't learn to work with these people at school. If anything, I learned that at my job (McDonald's), and in day to day activities >_>

I think he'll be fine. Think of how many kids have absolutely no idea what they want to do even after they're in college. The fact he's thinking about these things already is a good thing, IMO, regardless of what really ends up happening.
