Gather around kiddies, for I will now tell of my adventures with the homeless.

The setting? Chicago 2003. I was 15 years old, wandering down south on Michigan street. It was snowing, which is significant having come from desert Southern California. I wanted to see the photography museum, because it was free. If I kept walking, I would eventually find it. I passed a homeless man, I gave him a dollar. Kept walking, right to the Jewish Temple. I had walked to far. I turned around. I encountered the same homeless guy. He stopped me for a conversation. He asked me where I was from, and why I was in Chicago...where I was headed. He offered to give me a tour. We eventually found the photography museum. We were given many strange looks. Looks of suspicion. Shifty eyes of judgment cry no tears. He told me about how he had dated a Native American woman once. The things he said about her were beautiful. Too beautiful for me to recreate. When we left the museum, he told me how he needed money for the bus, to a place where he could get work. Ten bucks. and a box of cheese puffs for the ride. I gave him the money and went on my way.

I once found a drunken woman who looked homeless outside of a small secluded subway in a town of about 10,000. She was jumped from toe to toe singing "Subway eat fresh" with a great smile, she said "Hey buddy, can you spare some change I want to eat fresh too!" (there was a liquor store... no, like 3 of them within a minute's walk from there)

I gave her 5 bucks, because she was epic.

Re: Have you ever given a hobo money?

I've given a hobo 2 bucks before in Detroit.

Then there was this time me and my friend were pissed off from a party and went to the gas station. This bum asked for $7.50 for "transmission fluid". So we gave him all we had which was only 2 dollars. We then ended up taking him to another gas station. At this point we both thought he was really shady. Next, we took him to a 7-11 but when he saw a cop car there, he told us to just goto a local Kroger so he could use the ATM. When we got to the Kroger, he said "I'll be right back, please don't leave". So when he was walking up to the entrance, i saw him ask more people for money. I told my friend "**** this" and we just sped off. It was kind of scary but kind of an adrenaline rush.

The worst part was, about a month later, we went to Wendy's and we saw the same guy asking people for a ride and money. He came up to us but i think the guy does so much drugs that he didn't remember us.

But yea, that's what i do for hobos.

I usually give whenever I can when I go into NYC. Most of the time I just pass by 'beggars' but I always give to people that are doing something. There was this group of black kids and a woman singing and they sounded amazing so I gave them 10$ and there was another who was playing really good trumpet and I gave him 3$ and some change 'cause that's all I had in my pocket.

Re: Have you ever given a hobo money?

There are barely any homeless around where I live - when you go downtown, you see a few, but I've never been walking or in my own vehicle when I've seen them.

When I went to Washington D.C., there was a depressing amount of homeless. It's a very sad sight to see some rich businessman push a hobo out of his way because he's late for work.

I gave all the money I had with me to one man sleeping on a park bench [It only amounted to about $2.50.] Also, there was a man playing the trumpet near the subway. I knew he must have had anywhere from $10 to $100 in his hat, but I gave him $5 anyway because he, at least, was working for his money, and truth be told, he was very good at what he did.

Honestly, people. If you're worried he's going to use the money for drugs or alcohol, don't GIVE him money. Offer to take him to BUY some food, and if he gives a "wtf do i need food for" glare, just keep walking.

I've given a homeless college kid my leftovers from red lobster. 2 lobster tails and about 20 shrimp. He had a dog with him and was alone on the corner, looked like he'd been there for a few days. On a few other occasions I've given homeless people change, or a few bucks. I really feel obliged to give them something when I see them. At least whenever my gut tells me that they deserve something better than what they have.

Most i've ever given in cash was probably 5 dollars. Maybe 6 once or twice. i used to work at a jack in the box though and around the back parking lot is where most of the bums in the city i live in sleep. So, frequently, they would be inside sitting at a table or maybe out front on the curb. Whenever there was extra food i would go out and give it to them. i still see them once in awhile even though i quit and they're always nice.

I was walking in DC one time, and I saw a homeless man on a bench. I gave him my $5 lunch stipend, and he followed me around offering to buy me things with it. I was weirded out, as I was around 13 at the time, and had no idea of his good intentions. When he invited me back to his home, I was even more shocked to find that the homeless man was really an extraordinarily wealthy senator who was pretending to be homeless in an effort to better convince his peers to help allocate wealth to the poor. He let me have some sherry and made me a wonderful pasta dinner. As the hour grew late, I realized that the bus from my field trip would be leaving soon, so I tipped my hat to him and left.

On the way down his winding driveway, I was mugged by an actual hobo who took not only my remaining $5, but my hat and my left shoe as well.
