    Re: This is getting rediculous

I've been labeled as a gaming addict many times over, I spend 6-8 hours on the computer/game console per day, which adds up to 42-56 hours per week, or 180-240 hours per month. I do not have a girlfriend at the moment (although I have plenty of friends, many which are female), and I consider myself to have "no life".

    You know what I do?

I accept it. I mother f***ing love it. I love my lifestyle, and I love who I am. Tell your dad that if he can't accept who you are, then he can go give it oral to a baboon.

Whoo! Now I feel like doing an all-nighter on Quake 4!!

I have no life. I don't have a girlfriend, and I never had one. My day mainly consists of playing video games, browsing the internet, and anything else that is far from productive. I am lazy and do lousy in school. If all technology was taken away from me, I would probably be a much more productive person.

Voluntarily take a week off of gaming. Pick up a few good books and do your homework as soon as you get it. Spend more time talking on the phone with friends or out places. If you're at a friend's house just watch video games instead of playing. The maturity level will show your parents you're not addicted per say, just very enthused about gaming. The fact that you had the cool head to post such a well-constructed post which was grammatically sound shows me that you're at least a little better off than some of your online peers.

At the end of the week try and explain to your parents the difference between an addiction and a hobby. If either of your parents are coffee or cigarette slaves, bringing up their addictions in comparison might be beneficial (or they might get unreasonably upset and make your life worse, I really don't know your parents).

ad-dic-tion: Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance: a drug used in the treatment of heroin addiction.

You can't be addicted to something that isn't tangible.

The simple answer is to point out that some people like reading books. Therefore, they're addicted to books. Some people like going out with friends. Therefore, they're addicting to socializing.

Then again, this would just start a huge argument with your dad. I don't know why the hell he thinks some random online survey thing is the end-all proof of a child who plays video games too much, but if he truly thinks that is legitimate:

Okay. My parents thinks I'm addicted as well, but I'm not nearly the half of what the list says.

                  Does your child:
                  - Own his own computer: Yes, in fact, everyone in my school does.
                  - Neglect Personal Hygiene: Never. I take a shower everyday before I even go to school.
                  - Fantasy life on-line replaces emotional life with a partner: I have real friends, you know?
                  - Can't control computer or video game use: I might not, but I do take a break once in a while.
                  - May incur large phone or credit bills for on-line services: heck, I barely use my phone.
                  - Experiences video game Withdrawal, anger, or depression when not on the computer or involved with their video game: If anyone disses you online, how would you feel?
                  - Lying about computer or video game use: Why?
                  - Overweight: I play competitive soccer and DDR/ITG. No way.

                    Re: This is getting rediculous

My perents told me I was an addict, and they were pretty much right. I use to play Nintendo/PS2 at least 16hours a day. pretty much if I wasnt doing school I was playing games. I also skipped meals.

I decided to cut down the time I speand playing games, and I now play games about 5 hours a day (Counting SM and Stepping). Now I am on the computer alot, but Im either posting on forums or IM people I know and I also look stuff up on wikipedia just for the sake of something to do. I dont live around much of anything and my job is to stay at home and cook/clean/so on, so to keep from playing games in my spare time I get on here. That's probably 9 hours a day if we include games like SM and IMing. When I go out, I play DDR and Tekken and most of those trips (which steal from my computer time) last around 2-4 hours. Any other time Im making a store run, or cooking, or doing something else.

Dispite what Squeek says, I think you can be a addict to games, but I have proven many times I can stop dead turkey. Once I proved I could just stop for a week to my parents they werent as hard, and then I stopped for a month and they are pretty cool about it. That's not to say they dont tell me that being on the computer is a bad thing and I should go out more (they do alot) but the tones are more friendly and I do, of course, go bowling and arcading with my buddies. once a week.

Just stop. once they see it's something to do and not a addiction you'll be fine. They are only trying to help after all

                      Re: This is getting rediculous

It's just like all those chocoholics out there, I've heard of a lot of them, but I have not seen any chocohol.

                      - Own his own computer - Yes, I own my own computer, but so does everyone child in my neighborhood as well as everyone who does and does not have a job.
                      - Neglect Personal Hygiene - I didn't pick up gaming until I was in the 7th grade and before them, my personal hygiene hasn't improved. I don't cut my nails often because I'm lazy, I don't like baths because I hate getting wet, and I don't change clothes three times a day because that's just stupid. It has been like that since I was a kid and hasn't changed when I picked up gaming.
                      - Fantasy life on-line replaces emotional life with a partner - I don't date and I hate a lot of people. The only way I connect with people is here, on these forums. Is this forum some kind of game? No, didn't think so.
                      - Can't control computer or video game use - Nope, I can't control my gaming use when I have free time. People don't seem to understand the concept of free time. Free time is when you can do anything you want, relax, work, etc. My parents believe that free time means work time, I believe free time is relax time, I can do anything I want during my free time and hey, instead of playing the piano, which I don't enjoy, I play computer games.
                      - May incur large phone or credit bills for on-line services - The only reason I have a cell phone is because I was forced into getting one. I only carry it with me to receive calls, but hey, I hate everyone, so I don't have anyone who calls me. I have 2000 free anywhere minutes, I have used about 10.
                      - Experiences video game: Withdrawal, anger, or depression when not on the computer or involved with their video game - Not going to lie, I do.
                      - Lying about computer or video game use - Not going to lie, I do.
                      - Overweight - I'm more than 5 points under my BMI. I eat excessively as well as exercise quite a bit.

I just answered the survey truthfully and the only thing that proves that I'm a so-called "computer addict" is my withdrawal symptoms from video games and lying about my computer use, but I have good reasons for each of them. For a good period of time (aka my period of absence from FFR), I was quite angry over something I can't tell whether or not the anger came from being insulted by my parents or from my lack of games. However, that was the only period of time where I may have felt withdrawal "symptoms" and clearly, there was another factor going on. I've gone months on end without games before. I lie about my computer use because twenty minutes is unreasonable. If I have a paper to complete, I'm not going to do a good job with just twenty minutes.
