Two things are established when you tell a joke - the other person gains amusement, and you gain an improvement to how witty they think you are (Reputation, respect, admiration, whatever you wanna call it).
If you say something in the middle of a conversation that is meant to be a pun, and they don't get it, is it worth going back and spelling it out for them? By having to spell it out, it's usually not quite as funny, and while it may show you as witty, it may embarass them since they obviously didn't catch it.
