Is it worth explaining a joke?

Two things are established when you tell a joke - the other person gains amusement, and you gain an improvement to how witty they think you are (Reputation, respect, admiration, whatever you wanna call it).

If you say something in the middle of a conversation that is meant to be a pun, and they don't get it, is it worth going back and spelling it out for them? By having to spell it out, it's usually not quite as funny, and while it may show you as witty, it may embarass them since they obviously didn't catch it.

This is not quite Critical Thinking. CT is a place where controversial and interesting topics are debated. Examples of these would be something like the Black Only school opening in my area or Religious debates. These topics are also several large paragraphs in length.

i usually get a lot of jokes, but there are some i dont get because of how the person explains it. if i dont get it i ask the person to explain. then once i get it i just give a little 'hah' to show some amusement.

That's when you're aware a joke is taking place. What about little things intentionally intertwined into everyday conversation, like someone throwing a pun in? If the listener doesn't get it, is it really worth highlighting what you just said, putting huge arrows, and breaking it down so they do?

I don't think it's worth it. They don't get it ; They don't. We shouldn't go back and explain jokes for people who didn't understand unless people ask for a spelling out.

A joke essentially loses such status when it needs to be explained. At that point, it has already been rendered a personal muse instead.

Once it's clear that someone doesn't get the joke, the funny is mostly lost already; explaining it won't take anything more away from it.

Refusing to explain it, though, just makes you look like an asshole.

I would try and get someone around me to explain it for me if I told it to more then one person.

I think it's hilarity when both parties find humor in the joke. Some jokes has an explanation to it that's part of the pun. If one of the parties fail to understand, joke is dismissed as a pointless aphorism.
