    Playing RPG's in English class?

No, I don't mean replacing books with RPG's...

I think it would be a cool idea if an English class would, if only once, make an assignment to play through and RPG's.

I could just picture a class of students with Final Fantasy 8 out going "Ok can anyone tell what the symbolism of Squalls necklace is in the game? Anyone?"

Right now I think people still think of games and RPG's as pure fantasy with no meaning, but maybe in the future people will take the stories behind RPG's more serious... Or possibly, maybe creators will put more meaning into RPG's.

Seeing that we are living around the birth of computers and a technological age, it could be possible.

i've been thinking about that, there are so many games with stories that could beat even those of my english class.

examples: tales of symphonia plot is really deep and has a lot of twists.
every final fantasy even the first game have something good on the story,
(i would say, zelda games but link i mute).
and of course let's not forget about golden sun, and baten kaitos.

but the only way a english teacher let us do a story of a game is that the game is printed on a book and in the cover says "made by william"

      Exactly thats what Im saying.

Its because right now people are JUST staring to see the benefits of some videogames. The more we move progress into the technology age the more itll start coming into the classroom.

People still look at Video Games at just that... Games. But RPG's are basically Graphic and interactive novels.

Yes, that would go over REAL well.

Teacher: Good morning class. Please, please. Take your seats...we have a busy day ahead. Today, we will be getting into groups of 5's and running heroic instances.

Whoa. This thread should be in CT.

It's an interesting proposition, yes, but you would need something with a lot of depth in a story.

Classic books/novels/plays/etc. for high school English classes (or at least a few I've done):

The Giver - Lois Lowry (Eighth grade, but close)
The Lord Of The Flies - William Golding (Ninth grade)
The Princess Bride - William Goldman (Not to be confused with the author above)
Most famous Shakespeare plays: Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, maybe Othello or The Tempest

Unfortunately, most role playing games don't have the depth that the material for English classes do. Exceptions may include Final Fantasy X, which had arguably the most "probe-worthy" story out of any of the games, something from NAMCO's esteemed Tales series, or maybe a Star Ocean installment.

And if that doesn't work, we can always fall back on Viva Piñata.

well i agree that the story of final fantasy X is way better than the lord of the flies.

and making videogames part of the classroom would be a very good idea, i mean they did it with sports and some with TV why not videogames?

It doesn't have much fancy talk (if that's what you want to call it) compared to actual books, such as all of Shakespeare's junk.]

                      1.
Games have amazing storylines. So do movies and books. (Lord of the Rings)

RPGs are usually the only good games with in-depth storylines.

                      2.
RPGs increase vocabulary of the user.

Books just confuse the reader about unknown words.

                      3.
Books are boring to 70% of people in the world. The other 30% like them.

Games are boring to most girls, some guys... which makes up about 40% of people who don't like them, 60% that do.

                      4.
RPGs can take anywhere from 15-70 hours to play.

Books can take anywhere from 1-40 hours to read.

                      5.
                      40% of RPGs suck.

                      70% of books suck

Because literary works of art that have withstood the test of time can compare to the generic corporate hogwash. Yes, this makes sense.
