    Girl Burned By SpArKlEr???

I just heard on Fow News a story of a girl and her friend who were playing with sparklers, when her friend's sparkler was put on her shoe. The sparkler burned through her shoe and burnt her skin. Sparklers can reach up to 1800 degrees
(i am not sure about what scale this is on) according to Fox News.
Now the child's mother is trying to band sparklers from the market.

I think that they shouldn't be banned from the market, they already have an age requirement to be bought, witch means the parent or guardian will have a chance to inform the child of the dangers, since they are the ones who bought them, and will most likely be the ones giving them to the children.

the only reason is because the FLAME is 1800 degrees, and so are the sparks, but the sparks don't carry enough energy to actually burn somebody, so I think her claim will be ignored because of this very reason.

But it actually showed a photo of her burnt foot. The skin was all pale and dead, and the spot of dead skin looked as though it was about 4 by 2 inches. and it had a red ring around the spot of dead skin.

Why couldn't the sparkler burn her? What temperature does a spark need to start a fire? I am going to do some googling.

After googling I have learned that a cool flame may start at 200 celcius in a rich mixture of ether (oxidized chemical compounds) But I don't know if the outdoors atmosphere would be conciderd rich in ether.
I would think the average outdoor air isn't rich otherwise, what wouldn't be rich? (not much)
But even still 200 degrees is a low temperature, much lower than 1800 degrees.

The flame of the sparkler itself is what reaches 1800 degrees, the flash-looking sparks that come flying out of it are caused by that flame, and due to their small size, among other things, cannot cause a burn. Now, if someone dropped the actual sparkler on your foot, that would be a problem...

exactly-- the sparkler is not what burned her, her shoe was.. my suggestion would be to stay in a pool for the rest of her life

Stupid kid burns themselves with sparklers. Parents should have been watching their kid, instead Parents blame sparkler company for making sparklers. More at 11.

            Honestly now...

              Re: Girl Burned By SpArKlEr???

Well I read this webpage (it is not .com, or commercial, those are often unreliable) on the dangers of sparklers.

The sparks travel very quickly, and probably wouldn't lose much heat in a 1 inch or so distance travel. Plus, for some sparks to burn a kids skin, that could happen very quickly, the parents could look away for a few seconds and it could happen. (the heat could kill the skin, it doesn't have to actually spread the flame. you can get a burn from putting yourself into hot water, witch is a place a fire would extremely rarely ever start.)

I just think as long as there is an age requirement to buy the sparklers, and a warning label is made clear, they should be allowed.

.com sites aren't unreliable by nature.

Sparklers are only dangerous in the hands of idiots.

And news goes in chit-chat, so I moved it there.

this is dumb, how'd it get there anyways --- its the childs responsibility to kno what fireworks do, the parent should have been responsible enough to tell the kid that this and that are dangerous, tis not the stores or whatevers fault that he'she bought the works

I used a sparkler today, and damn, hold it in the wrong direction, or too close to the hand, and that thing can hurt. It won't burn you, but the sparks can sting when they touch the skin.

There's not need for a ban; people just need to be smarter. The girl was damn stupid to have the sparkler on her shoe; what the heck was she thinking?

Well it was another kid who put the sparkler on her shoe.

Also, the forum i put this in said it included discussion about media. The News is the media.

Commercial websites are what I usually skip over when looking at search results though. Not all of them lie, but a lot of them do. A commercial website is a website that advertises something. They might exaggerate information to "sell".
Networks or Organization sites are usually more about the facts.

Also, I would say kids are smart enough to know that sparks would hurt, but what if one of them gets angry and throws it, not knowing how badly it can injure, and thinking of it more like throwing a hot potato.

Once again, I think things should not be banned because people are stupid. The same argument can be made about games. There are people in the world who devote their lives to the point where all they can't do anything else. Does this mean games are completely bad and should be wiped from the face of the Earth?

The only one who should be punished is her friend, not the sparkler.

yea those things can get pretty hot, when i was like 12 i picked one up from the wrong end right after it was dark because i threw it, and i got a 2nd degree burn from touching it for half a second.

Yes but who will convict a child? They will convict the child's parents for them not properly watching their child.
But it doesn't mean the parent was being stupid if it's something that happened in a second, that barely gave the parent time to act.
In that case, who will be convicted? Who will recover the loses?
