Re: Leaving things in the on position.

Yeah, I USED to keep my computer on all the time, but it cost me my whole computer. I'm not sure how, but I left it on and overnight there was a power outage, in which a transformer was destroyed. I woke up and my computer had turned off. I tried turning it on and it got to a certain part in the loading up phase, but then just restarted. We tried safe mode, everything. It just kept restarting itself. Luckily, we were able to perform a system recovery and now I lost all my files, but at least I can play FFR. It could've been worse, to the point where even a system recovery wouldn't work. I guess I'm just lucky.

I never turn my computer off, but I always have my monitor off when idle...
As for video game consoles, never leave them on longer than necessary.

Re: Leaving things in the on position.

I'm not really afraid my computer will break down, I bought the parts based on how long they've been said to last. I just want this computer to out last my laptop, which lasted a pretty long time.

I like turning off my monitor when I'm not using it. It's something I've always dreamed of doing; my old laptop screen cannot be turned off when I'm not using it. The only way to get rid of the screen light is by folding the laptop and the closest I could get to leaving the laptop on is have it go to sleep instead of hibernating.

Hey, I never argued against it because it's a perfectly good stance.

I'm just willing to pay the extra buck or two a month so that people can always communicate with me via the computer and so that I don't have to go through the long-ass startup every morning.

          4) I always have a fan on me because I cannot stand silence. I have one on my desk and one on my bed. I have a ceiling fan, a vent fan for blowing out hot/cold air from my ventilation, and a backup fan.
I also run the ceiling fan whenever I'm in the room and the AC fan runs periodically. It's not that my room would be silent without the computer; it's that it would just lack the noise made by the computer, and that's the creepy part.

Seriously startup is an issue still?

Most computers start up in like 30 seconds to a minute. I hit the button and barely get myself comfortable in my chair by the time my computer is ready to go.

Well, if your startup time is 5-10 minutes, I can see why you'd want to leave it on if you're only going to be away for an hour or so.

I usually keep my computer on since I'm pretty much always running some sort of torrent, the times I'm not torrenting, I shut it down. My megawatts

Conserve energy for rechargeable batteries, guys. Turn off the backlight whenever you can for your mp3 player. The charge lasts longer, so in result the battery does, too.

We keep our computer on overnight, though.

If you don't have an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) it can literally fry all of your internal components.

It's a couple of minutes or so plus the minor annoyance of the dozen or so windows that pop up saying I have printer errors and whatnot. Then I have to reopen all the programs I want to run, sign into everything, etc. And I still have to wonder if anyone wanted to talk to me over the night.

Considerably longer than just shaking the mouse and having everything get pulled out of virtual memory, with everything as I left it the previous night and messages intact.

The only times that I do leave my laptop open all night is when I download torrents.

You've got to seed your torrents people, even at night. Night's the best time to for the fastest downloads.

You might as well say anybody who has a phone is ignorant. That's pretty dumb. I know plenty of people who don't have a house phone or other way of being reached other than a cell phone (my wife and I, for example), so what's so ignorant about that? And what's ignorant about somebody being on the move a lot and rarely being in their house where they could be reached by phone? Let's say you don't have a car and need a ride home from someplace, what's ignorant about having a phone to call your buddy/parent/sibling with a car to come get you? What if everybody you know uses the same wireless service and therefore all your calls are free with a cell phone, so you can get the cheapest plan and be able to reach everybody you need 24-7 no matter where you or they are? Please tell me what makes you think cell phones are so ignorant.

                                -___-

PS: Guys, you should at least turn your monitors off. Screensavers are basically useless nowadays because things really aren't gonna be burned onto your screen (I think only plasma still does that, but who the hell has plasma rofl), so leaving your screen on 24-7 is really bad for it. And even the worst monitors still only take like 10 seconds to start up, you can stand to wait a few seconds more than usual while your monitor comes on.

And even if you don't turn the comp off, putting it in Sleep mode (which I'm pretty sure 100% of computers have these days) is great. Everything is shoved onto your harddrive for the time being and when you come back it's like you never left, but your computer isn't raping your electric bill.

Then again a sleeping computer can't receive IMs (not a problem with the newest AIM and YIM and probably other things) or torrent things (lollegal), but I'm sure if you guys aren't paying the power bill/aren't poor those things are more important to you than consuming less electricity. Really I only put my computer to sleep because it heats up my room. Once it gets its own room to be in I'll prolly never make it sleep. XD

As for battery life, if you cared about your battery you'd leave your crap on extra anyway. The best thing for battery life (as just about any instruction manuals that come with anything with a rechargeable battery will tell you) is to let the battery run completely dead every so often and then recharge it to 100%. I let my phone go nearly dead before it recharges, and it lasts for like 4-5 days depending on how long I talk on it. Even if its battery life halves to *gasp* 2 days it'll still be fine. It's not like battery life is really an issue for cell phones unless you have one that is like 8 years old.
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.
