This is just like the group "The Beatles" they had long hair, and it was unusual at the time, they were really great singers so the fans wanted to be like them having long hair, etc.
Same goes with emo bands, they dress up extremely unusual sing about cutting themselves and then a not so big majority of people finally figure out that cutting themselves is the final solution to all their problems..
Sure there's other emotional music, but that's besides the point.. Do they sing about cutting themselves and dress up in unusual clothing?
