    Re: Learning Japanese: Intro Lessons

    Wow... that's dedication.

I remember the first uncommon kanji I learned. I was at the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC, and there was a booth where you could learn how to write a kanji with a calligraphy brush. Most of the examples were nice common things like 月, 桜, etc. I asked for "barrel". =D After a bit of confusion over why I would want to learn this, she taught me. 樽!

I write a lot, with brush and pen.

I spend on avg 3 hours a day on Kanji. Just fyi.
lol, the heisig method, I've heard so many bad things about that, like it's a complete waste of time unless you manage to get through the entire curriculum, and that the first book is severely lacking in multiple English equivalents for a 漢字.
Calligraphy is good, it gives a stronger sense of knowledge about whatever you're writing as opposed to typing and even handwriting. Not fair, I wish I could spend 3 hours a day on 漢字.

Heisig is good but you gotta treat it as only half done, I have no trouble reading comon things now and only occasionally I need to look something up.
Practicing reading is essential, and lots of it. Btw drilling Kanji the normal method is less effective than splitting the process, at least for me. Of course I am gonna complete everything, as far as I am now, quiting would be like committing suicide, as for effectiveness of heisig, it does its job.

            Buy Rosetta Stone.

Actually, I'm definitely going to try anything and everything I can to learn Japanese. I'm going to be a business major, so Japanese would probably be a good language to know, seeing how intertwined US and Japanese businesses are.

Don't get ripped off by rosseta stone. Try out http://www.japanesepod101.com/

excellent from begginer -> advanced, their free features are enough in my opinion. I used their podcasts for a bit, very nice.

There is also subscription options, check 'em out.

No, I don't work for them but their podcasts helped me a lot.

Not only does it cost too much, it doesn't have much to offer. Only decent for vocab. Pimsleur is pretty decent for beginners, but is also fairly expensive. *dodging the FBI* but you can find copies for both rather cheaply

japanesepod101.com is pretty good for listening skills, I need to spend more time there

Personally, the best way to make progress other than living in Japan was to take classes at my college, where interactions with classmates and 先生s are priceless (apart from the $500 or so per semester for tuition lol) as opposed to self-learning and even a one-on-one tutor to some extent, although having a tutor isn't a bad idea to enforce what you've learned in class. Wow, that was a long sentence, I must be turning Japanese.

EDIT:not long enough, I should've doubled the length of that sentence lol
