Ok, I see all of your points. "He's probably lying." "We're simply having fun at the mere fact that this is likely entirely fabricated. If he gives proof we'll stop."
But shouldn't you be respectful first and ridiculing later after it's proved fabricated? I'm not saying I'm not a skeptic, but at the sincere possibility that somebody did in fact lose their life, whether 'the internet is srz business' or not, we should be respectful before disrespectful. Imagine (hell you may not even HAVE to imagine) that this person really killed themself. How do you feel? I wouldn't say you'd be feeling to great. Now imagine it was fake. Sure, you were right, but it doesn't mean a similar situation won't pop up, but the situation isn't a false 'cry for attention'. I'd feel pretty crappy about my actions.
All I'm saying amounts to 'innocent until proven guilty' should be as solid as 'real until proven fabricated' in possibly extreme situations such as this. Until something is proven you really shouldn't take drastic actions; whether your 'just messing around' or not.

If it's true, RIP.
If not, I can only say the ridicule was way over well-deserved, because fabricating lies about somebody's death isn't something you should do. Ever.
