On May 20, 2006, he fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg shortly after the start of the race, an injury which ruined any chance of a Triple Crown win. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. He had several more surgeries and his prognosis swung up and down for eight months. While his right leg eventually healed, both of his rear legs continued to have problems, including laminitis in his left leg. A last-ditch effort to use an external skeletal fixation device on his healed right leg to address an abscess was not successful.
i stopped caring about barbaro so freaking long ago, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that that horse was screwed anyways so at least this whole thing is over with
It's not something that was doubted, it was something that would never have happened again. Horses with serious injuries like that are usually put down right on the track, but the owners didn't want to see that happen to him. They wanted him to at least be stable and somewhat pain-free and live out a calm life on their farm. He was an amazing horse.
I'm also not necessarily a fan of racing, and it's a shame to see this happen, although one can understand why or how it did. Barbaro was about 3 years old. Most racing horses are very young...probably from 2-4 years old. Thoroughbreds don't finish maturing until they're about 7 or 8 years old. Their bones aren't fully developed yet and their legs are pretty weak, but they can move fast if they don't carry much weight. Where do most horses go after their short lives in the racing world? The slaughter house.

Rofl, Cartel lyrics.
The only worse thing is that I recognized them and immediatley played the song.

"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor
