Work? Nobody really knows. Something doesn't develop right in someone's brain, leading to autism, while another part of the brain somehow works extraordinarily.

ps accordin to the memory part of my psych textbook it sounds like his short-term memory doesn't filter properly so a lot of extraneous details get dumped into his long-term memory

Read "An Anthropologist on Mars" by Oliver Sacks... there's a chapter fairly well devoted to him.

it's far more complex than that... stephen's savant talents are really only visual and artistic, and within that sphere, his fascination is solely with buildings (although he does have an appreciation for cars). stephen does have some mimetic abilities as well (able to imitate others surprisingly well) that are relatively more common among autistic savants. this isn't some generalized breakdown in his ability to filter information, it's a very specific aptitude most likely caused by an incredible overspecialization for the brain areas responsible for visual memory.
