    Re: FFR, the new Myspace?

Let me put it this way. I, more than anyone cares about the history of FFR. I refuse to purge records, take care when upgrading not to lose posts or records and do my best to make everything compatible for everyone.

I do my damn best to handle the 30,000+ unique people that visit this site each day without turning it into some sort of generic piece of crap. It's hard to retain a sense of community when you have nearly 960,000 members or whatever we have. How would you handle that many members, keep the growing, operational and at the same time handle new development?

Realize this.. You can either have the profile people in profiles or you can have them in the forum. You know what I'm say'n?

Criticism is cool but I have not heard any realistic suggestions.

    Cheers,

    Synthlight

Yea worse-case, you have a bunch of people to flame back into the profile sections XD.

Anyone who I've seen post in the forums wrong gets put back into place so it seems everyone is clipping the buds of anything bad that could come out.

I personally don't see a problem though. If people want myspace stuff, wouldn't they go to myspace and not a flash game site???

In that case, implement something that give those who have been loyal to this site for 3-4 a reason to believe that the site isn't digressing into a "Myspace with a DDR Game."

        Suggestion?

Let the 2-4 years be able to display that they've actually been apart of the site that long. I know it sounds elitist and not fair, but we as the veterans want to see the site flourish, and not degenerate into another hangout for the "Myspace" kids.

I agree with you chromer. I haven't been a member for quite as long as you but I've still been around long enough to notice a big difference in the type of people that join. It seems like every day more and more people are in the MP lobby trying to find a new ****ing myspace friend. I think the word myspace should be censored in the MP lobby.

Synth maybe you could make a way to display it under the sn kind of like the way junior member or whatever is displayed right now under it in the posts. It could say something like 2yr vet or something

Why is this such a big ****ing deal? Just post in subforums where they don't. Or move to ODI.

Sheesh...every group gets updates, and all of them are important. Sure, you may think that the forum regs are more important than MP chat, but then again the MP chat people probably feel that they're more important than you =P

But honestly, this is just paranoia...you think the site is going to turn into a Myspace clone because of one feature? Give me a break, like LD said, this site will NEVER turn into a myspace clone...it's about music games first and foremost, and there are always going to be updates that pertain to music games *coughResonancecough*. To ask that ALL updates be about you is just selfish.

That may be a person's and/or your opinion, but I'm not speaking for myself. I'm speaking for the people who have been here long enough to make an impression on FFR. Shash, you're not known because you've been here for a while, but because you ****ing AAA every song thrown at you. You and I, we 're not apart of that "Myspace" culture.

Now take "Johnny Nubsteroni" who comes into FFR because his Myspace friend told him he could get more people for his buddy list, that's the view that I don't want FFR to be seen as. People might think I'm paranoid, but in reality, it's people who are oblivious to the changing times (except Synth and Jay of course =P) that fail to realize the truth.

                      Re: FFR, the new Myspace?

A simple solution would be to create a forum for ffrspace, and ffrspace only. If it were possible to create a script that allowed " Noobs" or people who haven't been here longer than lets say three months, to block them from posting in certain area's of the forums, thats would be cool, but I know Synth would not agree because that would mean complaints out the ass about this.
As for the profile IMO, I dont mind them as of now. I agree with chromer, where sooner or later the ffr community isn't going to be what it is now, or even in the past, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. I don't think there is any solution around this, except of course to limit what you add to profile creations, yet I know you guys like to try new things from time to time. Play it by ear for now, because we may be just over exagerating the effects of these profiles.

In my opinion, all you regulars are strong enough to keep those MySpace-lovers at bay. Nothing to worry about, really.

Like tora said, this isnt a big deal.Synth is just trying to make this site enjoyable for every type of people. Hell i dont like the chat, i think its annoying, but i dont go making posts about how much i hate them. The point is, is that synth is just doing what he has for the past 4 years, making the site better for everyone. And it looks like its worked because we're almost to 1 million members. Just let him do what hes been doing best without complaining about it. From reading his posts in this thread he sounded insulted because this new feture he worked hard on wasnt good enough, or was too much for you guys. Lay off people.

Wait, you want the site to flourish, but you don't want it to appeal to everyone? The simple fact of the matter is that the game is enjoyable, and Synth and Co. have put a lot of work into the game to keep it enjoyable, so it will continue to attract people...And 80% of the people will be dumbasses. Also remember that most of the now veterans started off in that 80% of veterans.

I think that they should add features people want. Especially if they're features which remain segregated from the forums (or in my case, the GVG forum.) I still don't understand the fear you have that people will turn the FFR profile section into something which resembles myspace. People obviously enjoy myspace. And since when has non-conformity been the calling card of FFR? I mean, I don't think it's a conformist site by any means, but I also don't think it's gone out of it's way not to conform.

Under your avatar it says how long you've been at FFR for. You want a little picture that says it? And the special forums only for veterans? That stuff just reeks of elitism, and I think it'd be a dumb addition.

I don't place my enjoyment over the enjoyment of others. If 20% of people want the same stuff, then they should get 20% of the focus. I don't think veterans should get more focus because they "mean more" to the site. I also happen to, for the most part, disagree with that. There are obviously exceptions, as in the people who contribute to the actual growth of the game, and not just the growth of the community of the game. But I think that the veterans who just contribute to the community (myself included...Although I'm not trying to claim that I've contributed all that much to the community...just making sure people don't think I'm talking down to them.), are totally replaceable. You leave, and your presence will be missed, for a bit, then everyone will move on. And giving special treatment to replaceable people seems like a waste of effort to me.

I'm prepared for almost everyone to disagree with most of my thoughts on the subject.

But refusing to add features which the majority of the people want (people who obviously would have to voice their opinion) simply to appease veterans just seems like a bad idea to me.

I suggest you guys seek out a second or third community as well, that way you can keep the ties you have here, while finding a community which maybe fits your personal tastes more than FFR does.
I'll trade you this delicious doorstop for your crummy old danish.
                              Done, and done.
