If you are trying to win a girl over, don't you think a girl (who just so happens to be the same gender as your ... target, if you will) would know best how to win her over?

Well, the thing is, every person has different preferences. I think doing the opposite is a bit out there, but still, you're not going to hit 100% if you follow one person's advice about winning over another.

I wish it were that easy =/

She actually went up to me and said that she doesn't like me like that but she doesn't want to lose me as a friend. That's what I was going to go up to her and say(except for the she doesn't like me part). I would rather have it this way than never talk to her again, but it still hurts just being around her.

I had this exact same problem. If you'd get AIM, I'd be willing to talk to you one-on-one about it. I'm not going to retell my story here. It's too much all at once and I don't think it will help at all.

Seriously, you have to be confident man. You have to lay that **** down. She likes you, she's just playing hard to get, but you already screwed that up. What you have to do is play it off, show interest in other girls and just treat her how she says "she wants to be treated" as a friend. Ignore that you ever said you liked her, treat her like one of your boys, and do what you have to do. Who knows? Next year or the year after she may realize that she wants to date you because you two have a deeper bond than any other dude that she attempted to date and it'll work out. Never act out of desperation or directly let a girl know that you like her, you can approach, but ultimately they will come to you if you have the confidence and drop some hints.

Seriously, you have to be confident man. You have to lay that **** down.

One of the weirdest tricks that I've learned is that when you are a jerk to them sometimes, but every once in awhile you be uber nice to them, you have a better chance than if you were nice to them all the time.

Being nice all the time = friends for life.
Being a jerk and being nice = girlfriend.

Don't ask me why, it's just my personal experience.
