Don't buy a credit card. You will overspend, miss a payment, etc, and pay for it with your credit rating later. Remember, those things last your entire life. Screw up now, and pay for it forever.

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

I hate using my debit card. And I only use my credit card to make online purchases and to pay for gas and other car related things because I get a discount.

Other than that, I only use cash. Can't go wrong with cash.

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

I would have to say that the option between a debit and credit card is based on your spending habits and your personality. Naturally (because I'm asian ^_^) I am VERY stingy with my money. Although I'm not one of those extreme asian who will only buy things (including food) that is on sale, I stay away from things I don't absolutely need that aren't at a reasonable price. Also, seeing that my job doesn't pay that much, I am used to not paying as much for things because I don't have enough funds coming in. I know everyone is going to go "BUT ZOMG ITZ DIFFERENT WHEN YOU MOVE OUT" but it is just more bills to pay with a higher income coming in. The way I look at it, if you are smart and responsible, a credit card is a good idea =)

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

I'm getting it to help my credit rating. My oldest sister screwed herself with credit card debt and don't worry, I won't repeat that. I realize that a credit card is basically just a loan from the bank, and I'm not going to use it unless it's something I would buy anyway. I know how much (more like how little) money I have and I don't spend much.

Like, I've had over 100 bucks sitting in my pocket for months now. I've seen things I wouldn't mind buying here and there but I dunno, I don't like spending money. I figured I might as well get a credit card now because well, might as well build up my credit rating every time I buy something, especially if I'm gonna be buying stuff anyway.

But really, I think it's funny. Capital One sent me this thing in the mail and so I went to the site and signed up. I've never had a job before, and I even told them I was unemployed on the site, but they still give me a credit card. It's like these bastards don't even care that they're stealing money away from poor stupid kids that don't know any better. =\
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

it's far easier to get a credit card if you're poor and dumb. They love those types... the people who only pay the minimums. Start em off with a nice 0% introductory rate, they miss a payment, all of a sudden the interest rate is 24% (which is a criminal rate, really, but it happens) and the people are like "wtf" and they're like "contract lol better read it next time oh and btw see this clause here? this means that if you **** up on another credit card or loan, we can raise your rates even higher. It's ok that you can't pay it, we've strategically set our minimum payments so that we still make an insane amount of profit."

edit: btw not saying you're poor or dumb... just making a semi-tangential comment.

              I wouldn't go that far.

I do have a credit card, and I use it for one thing and only one thing - buying gas for my car. I pay the bill promptly every month, and in doing so build credit for when I will need it later in life.

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

I got a credit card 3/4s of the way through last year. I've always used my debit card before, but I got the cc so I can build credit. I use it for EVERYTHING I buy, from fast food to dvds to groceries, etc.

I have good credit of 756. I closed 4 open accounts that I don't use the other day, which helped build my credit, even though I wasn't using them. But leaving them open for 10+ years without use will start to bring my credit down (these were only open 4 and less years). I pay off my credit card every month in full, about 15 days ahead of time. It's very easy to do online. My credit card bill each month usually averages $200-300 range. Remember, I put everything on it.

I'm smart with money. I know what I can and can't afford and keep splurging to a semi-minimum (not nearly as what I used to be, but then again, I had little money to work with.. now I'm not such a cheap-ass).

A credit card is not stupid, unless someone gets one before college. Only then I think it's a bad idea.

Exactly, it's called responsibility and you have to learn it sometime.

To get approved for any card, I have to give a permanent address, so the bills go straight to my parents, and instead of forwarding them to me, or at least telling me how much I owe, my dad just pays them, which pisses me off.

(late response) That pisses you off? Most people would love parents that do that. XD

BUMP BECAUSE THE CC JUST CAME IN THE MAIL AND IS NOW IN MY WALLET! Time to let it sit there and barely use it ever. =)

Re: I just applied for a credit card.

I have a credit card for super-duper emergencies (mostly in case my cats' vet bills ever go higher than I can afford at that moment, which thankfully hasn't ever happened) and for Mike's every once-in-a-while online poker sites, which the bank won't let him use his debit card for.

Mostly I use my debit card or cash--I try not to put anything on the CC if I don't have to. Besides, all I buy is fast food, clothes, or books--nothing so expensive I can't just take it out of the bank account right then. No need to pay interest on that kind of stuff.

Then again, I also have a credit card with my name on it that's connected to my parents' main CC acount. I use that for gas (since they've always paid for my gas and I see no reason for that to change if they don't) and for groceries (which they agreed to pay for when I moved out) and for schoolbooks, and for anything I don't really want to pay for myself My parents pay their bill in full every month, often sending in more money than they need to so that they never need to worry about missing a payment or not having enough money in the credit line.

Oh yeah, they also pay my cable/internet/phone bills. But that goes with the house, which is technically theirs even though they don't live here. Funnily enough, the electric/heating/etc. bill comes straight out of my bank account every month because stupid PECO won't let them put it as a monthly debit on the credit card.

I'm actually trying to wean myself off of my parents' largesse, which is difficult because I don't have a lot of money, but that is slowly changing as my new job pays much better than any job I've ever had.
